(Media-Newswire.com – Environmental Impact Statement (EIS for the proposed $ 8.3 billion Galilee coal project today released for public comment.
Waratah Coal proponent proposes to develop a series of new thermal coal mine near Alpha and water infrastructure and associated power supply, and construction of a railway of 468 kilometers long from the mine to the Abbot Point area development State.
As State Development Minister Rachel Nolan said the Galilee Basin development as an important center for coal mining, processing and export, had great potential to provide the future prosperity of the region and state.
"It's important to find the right balance between the development of large projects like this and minimize their impact on regional communities and the local environment," said Mrs Nolan.
"If funds Galilee coal project, which could generate around 6,000 jobs during construction and 1500 jobs during the operational life of which is expected to exceed 25 years.
"The development could produce up to 40 million tons of thermal coal for the international market every year.
"If the project receives final approval, the coal is transported by rail from the mines to a new arsenal and port facilities at Abbot Point.
"However, the approval of port infrastructure at Abbot Point will be subject to separate approval process. "
General Coordinator Keith Davies said the scale, potential effects and complexity of the approval of the project requires a rigorous EIS to consider the potential environmental, cultural and socio-economic in the local community.
"The rail corridor has been a subject of public discussion to date, and is and always has been the point of view of the State Government that the final configuration must have a minimum impact on the existing community," said Davies.
"I have visited the region and met with community issues and issues raised at these meetings will be taken into account, along with formal presentations.
"Other authors are also considering similar infrastructure. What could look favorably on a proposal for a joint rail corridor, if this is possible.
"The launch of an EIA acknowledges the complexity of a project, the significant benefits it can bring and the need to carefully evaluate their environmental impacts could be mitigated and how the project was approved to continue.
"The Galilee Coal EIS will be available for public comment until November 7, 2011.
"I encourage all interested parties to provide information about the proposed development as part of the evaluation of major projects."
