Bernards Township Police — Stolen Mercedes recovered

BERNARDS TWP. – A 2011 Mercedes Benz was stolen
from a driveway in the township early Tuesday, Sept. 20, before
being recovered hours later in Essex County, according to
police.

The car's owner, a Lake Road woman, was staying overnight at a
relative's home on Martinsville Road where she parked the car
before it was taken sometime between 3:30 and 4:30 a.m., police
said. The Mercedes, valued at $70,000, was equipped with a
menu-installed tracking system which was subsequently activated and
pinpointed its location in a parking lot in Belleville, police
said.

Township detectives responded to Bellville by 6 or 7 a.m. to
process evidence and retrieve the car, which was found with no
damage. A purse that had been left in the car remained but was
missing $300 cash, police said. The car utilized a key "fob'' – a
electric start button – that had been left in the car at the time
of the theft, police said.

"We recommend that people do not leave electronic key fobs in the
car because it creates an opportunity for the car to be stolen,"
said police Lt. Ted, Reese.
