Thundering Herd women slip past Ball State, 60-58

MUNCIE, Ind. — The Marshall women’s basketball team connected on key free throws in the closing minutes and celebrated New Year’s Eve with a 60-58 victory over Ball State on Saturday at Worthen Arena.

Jasmine Shaw led the Thundering Herd (9-3 with 12 points. Victoria Wells added 11 and Alyse Poindexter 10. Erica Woods had one of the best games of the year on the boards, recording a career-high 14 rebounds. She got nine on the offensive glass and 10 overall in the first half.

«It was a mental toughness win for us,» Marshall coach Royce Chadwick said. «It was a very gritty performance by a team that decided to lock it down in the last five minutes. The defense was spectacular in the last five minutes. Players stepped into roles when they needed to and made spectacular plays when they need to especially on defense.»

Rashedah Henriques converted a put-back lay-up with 4:00 left to put Marshall ahead, 51-50. From there, the Cardinals (5-8 had to foul and the Herd made seven free throws in the final minutes to hang on.

Jazmin Hitchens led the Cardinals with 17 points and seven rebounds. Shanee’ Jackson chipped in with 12 points.

Ball State built a 9-point lead (50-41 thanks to two jumpers from Mercedes Miller, but Marshall responded with a 10-0 run to regain control. The game was tied again at 54-54 with 1:44 left, then the Herd scored four of the next five points.

The game was the second half of a men’s-women’s doubleheader. In the men’s game, Ball State beat Chicago State, 86-58.

Marshall will open Conference USA play Thursday at Houston.

Financial advisers look ahead to 2012

If your job over the past year required you to track the stock market on a daily basis, chances are you’re ending the year with a queasy stomach and a sore neck.

This year has been characterized by wild daily fluctuations in the markets as investors reacted to various bits of good (Europe has solved its debt crisis! and bad (Europe has not solved its debt crisis! economic news.

But much like a roller coaster, the markets ended the year about where they started. The SP 500 ended the year up 0.4 percent while the Dow Jones industrial average was up 5.5 percent. To shed more light on what the next 12 months might look like, we turned to a handful of money managers and financial advisers in Charlotte and the Triangle.

Each answered a series of questions about investing strategies, economic indicators to watch in the months ahead and what they’ve learned from the global economic crisis.

Although it should go without saying, we’ll say it anyway: None of this advice is foolproof. Investors should do their own research, stay diversified and assess their own appetite for risk.

Spend time understanding the correlation between different investment asset classes and see how they respond to daily market fluctuations. Have your investments stress-tested for different economic and market events to find areas of both opportunity and vulnerability.

Global markets will hinge on whether there is unified action in Europe – not just talk of action – and the painful ramifications of inaction. U.S. markets will continue to battle between an improving economic-front domestically, paired with a slowdown in growth globally. Continued market volatility will create more tactical opportunities, taking advantage of broad asset class pullbacks and subsequent recoveries.

A global tactical approach, which combines core investment holdings such as a low-correlative mix of multiple asset classes and styles, utilizing both traditional and nontraditional investments complemented by opportunistic and shorter-term satellite positions where profits are taken more quickly. Also, look to cushion volatility in a portfolio with investments that generate cash flow back to the investor.

The U.S. dollar (strengthening too fast, a slowdown in industrial production and business spending kept on ice.

Baltic Dry Index, Dow Jones-UBS Commodity Index, International Trade and the Consumer Price Index.

Regarding Europe, collectively they are aiming in the right direction but now they need to pull the trigger. Europe could take a long time to heal, but they will. Lessen exposure there if time is a factor or if overweight in that region. Look domestically or to smaller foreign markets with better growth potential. Political uncertainty in the U.S. happens every four years, if not more often. I don’t see it having much of an impact in 2012, more so in 2013. The world is flat, and the U.S. markets grow more and more sensitive to the loud noises from our neighbors across the pond.

Expect no return on cash. Cash is meant not to be invested. It should be 100 percent safe and 100 percent liquid. Look to invest in sleeves of risk (there are multiple types, having the highest risk sleeve contain your longest term dollars. This allows you to keep a large percentage of your assets very safe while collectively enhancing the overall return on all of the dollars.

A wise strategy is to focus less on a particular investment and instead define what it is you desire to accomplish. Define the goal, the time horizon, the expected return, the savings requirement, the tolerance for risk, the tax implications, etc. Money is a «means to an end.» If the «end» is not defined and planned for, the likelihood of success is greatly reduced. Also, appreciate that a «financial plan» is not solely comprised of an investment strategy. Be sure to create an efficient strategy for cash flow planning, asset and liability management, protection planning, tax reduction, and estate and legacy planning. If you need help, seek the guidance of a credentialed professional.

No forecast.

For equities consider dividend payers, defensive sectors such as consumer staples and health care, and multinational companies with diverse geographic revenue sources; for fixed income consider quality corporate and municipal debt; focus on risk and valuation. Alternative investments should play a larger role in portfolio construction and diversification, so educate yourself on this asset class. And remember, emotions should be removed from the investment decision-making process.

The evolving European debt crisis and the potential impact on the Euro zone banking system. The eventual rise of inflation and interest rates.

Jobs are key; so are consumer confidence and housing.

Calamity and crisis will come and go, then repeat. I suggest that investors spend energy only on what is in their control. With that said, focus on your «personal economy»: reduce debt, live within your means, save more, save even more and plan and prepare for the certainty of uncertainty.

First, acknowledge the reality that «cash» (savings, money markets, CDs are paying nominal yields that equate to negative real returns (return after inflation. Second, understand that a number of opportunities do exist to boost yields with a minimal increase in risk and/or volatility.

Focus on lowering the volatility of your portfolio. Do it through diversification and by focusing on higher quality assets. If you’re going to own fixed-income, own high-quality. If you’re going to own equities, own quality but also own where there’s growth. You really need to be in the developing or emerging markets where growth is high and they don’t have the debt problems and they have inflation instead of deflation.

I think Japan, Europe and the U.S. are going to struggle. You’ll be lucky to make a positive return in any of those markets. In the developing world I think there are a number of places where you could make money. But the risks are there too in that many of those markets rely at least for some of their exports on these other markets. I’m hopeful we might see flat returns in the developed world and low single-digit returns in the developing world.

Gold, Long Treasuries (TLT, health care companies and companies that are consumer staples. High-quality technology companies with lots of cash and low debt.

Icons of Style: Mercedes-Benz Features New SL Roadster and Supermodel Lara Stone in Calvin Klein Collection, Captured …

NEW YORK , Dec. 22, 2011 /PRNewswire/ – Mercedes-Benz USA announces today the 2012 Fashion Collaboration starring the new SL Roadster with Lara Stone in Calvin Klein Collection, captured by Alex Prager .  The 2012 Mercedes-Benz Icons of Style images by Alex Prager can be described as:

A beautiful woman stands alone in the desert, suitcases in hand. Yet in this 21st century update on classic Film Noir, the blonde is her own getaway driver, outpacing a tornado in a sleek SL Roadster by Mercedes-Benz.

(Photo: http://photos. prnewswire.com/prnh/20111222/NY26346 (Logo:  http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20100901/NY58315LOGO

The American photographer and filmmaker, Alex Prager , is known for creating surreal and enigmatic movie moments inspired by Frederico Fellini and David Lynch . Yet in her versions – heady with mystery, lust and desire – the woman is in control.  Of her enigmatic images for the 2012 Mercedes-Benz Icons of Style, Alex Prager said she chose cinematic greats as her Icons of Style. «I constantly reference Fellini characters and Hitchcock as well,» said Prager.

Dutch supermodel, Lara Stone plays the update on the Hitchcock blonde, a strong protagonist who overcomes loneliness and fear. This inner strength is underscored by a timeless and elegant dress worn by Lara Stone and designed by Calvin Klein Collection’s Women’s Creative Director, Francisco Costa .

The SL Roadster featured in the latest Mercedes-Benz Icon of Style campaign, combines technical innovation with sleek sportiness and classic luxury and reinterprets the legendary Mercedes-Benz classic of the 1950s for today.

Lara Stone commented, «It’s an honor to work with Mercedes-Benz on a project like this.  Both Mercedes-Benz and Calvin Klein Collection brands represent great luxury and timeless elegance and it was a really unique experience.»

The Mercedes-Benz Fashion Collaboration, Icons of Style, is making its US debut at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Fall 2012 from February 9-15 , 2012.

The 2012 Icons of Style key visual is the latest in a stunning series of outstanding visuals celebrating the unique combination of design and style that is Mercedes-Benz. Nick Knight has posed Julia Stegner in Gareth Pugh with the SLS AMG; Miles Aldridge photographed Milla Jovovich wearing a spectacular hat from Philip Treacy next to the Mercedes E-Class Convertible; Craig McDean and David James staged Karolina Kurkova next to the new CLS and last season, Terry Richardson captured Jessica Stam on the roof of the A-Class concept car.

The designers have presented the most recent generation of SL icons in an unmistakable way, by combining a deep sense tradition with new perspectives and visions. The result is a stylish, sporty and elegant luxury sport’s car with the classic, SL-typical well-balanced proportions: the long bonnet is followed by a compact passenger compartment and the wide, sleek rear perfects the look. Understated, artistically designed lines define the powerfully modelled yet smooth surfaces of its silhouette. Finely engineered details from the dynamic, traditional form repertoire of Mercedes-Benz visually underline the legend of the SL. From a technological perspective, the SL presents itself as a spectacular trendsetter. Manufactured almost completely from aluminium, it weighs a lot less than its predecessor. Innovations like the unique FrontBass system, which turns the SL into a concert hall, whether open or closed, or the adaptive MAGIC VISION CONTROL System are all pioneering developments with an eye to the future.

2012 Mercedes-Benz B-Class first drive

The first small front-wheel drive Mercedes was a disappointment. And an expensive embarrassment for its maker. I was there when, in 1997, the upright A-class failed the ‘elk test’, a tight lane-change manoeuvre where it came close to turning over.

Mercedes withdrew the car from sale, modified its suspension and fitted electronic stability control and recovered its reputation for safety but there remained the suspicion that its engineers were not comfortable with small cars and front-wheel drive. Even with the enhanced specification, the A-class did not achieve the solidity and refinement for which Mercedes is renowned.

The B-class, a larger relation of the A-class, appeared in 2005. Optimistically labelled Compact Sports Tourer, it was intended for the USA but never went there, which is probably just as well as it also failed to live up to Mercedes' premium brand values.

2012 Mercedes-Benz B-Class first drive

The nightmare for Mercedes was that although they felt and looked cheap, the A- and B-class were expensive to make. The double-floor construction devised to give the cars a high seating position and the same crash protection as the bigger cars, dictated a powertrain arranged like a slice of cheese so that it could slot under the upper floor.

The compact four-cylinder engine lying back at 59 degrees and the special transmission behind it shared nothing with any other cars in the Mercedes range. Mercedes decided that the new generation of these cars should be more conventional: lower, single-floored and transverse-engined with the gearbox alongside, like everyone else's front-wheel drive designs.

Determined to expand its small car sales, it called for a new Compact Car Platform (code-named MFA which could be produced with five different body styles. The first of these is a compact MPV – the new B-class. It is a quantum leap from the previous model and Mercedes is confident enough in its prospects that it will be offered in most markets around the world.

The current plan is to assemble the new B-class in India with sales to start from October 2012. We will also get the new A-class which will be launched next year as a sporty low-line hatchback (similar to the concept model revealed at the Shanghai Motor Show in April and most crucially the SUV based on the MFA platform will be made here (rivalling the X1 and Q3 and finally giving Mercedes the volumes to chase down the number 1 tag it held for so long in India.

In Europe, the new B effectively replaces both the B- and A-class and is designed to appeal to existing owners as well as newcomers to the marque. Although they are not cheap (in the UK, the B-class starts at Rs 19lakh, around the same price at which it will be launched in India, these are the entry models for Mercedes and now, for the first time, they incorporate many of the features and comforts of the larger cars.

The B-class is still a tall car, even if its height has been reduced by 5cm compared with its predecessor, but the lower floor means that the seats can be more upright and increases available cabin space. Outside, the dimensions are much the same but it has a much better stance, accentuated by a body feature line that kicks up through the rear doors and over the wheelarch. The old one was – well, a bit odd – but the new B looks like a proper Mercedes.

It claims to be the most aerodynamically efficient family car, with a drag coefficient of 0.26 (which will be reduced to 0.24 for the forthcoming Eco model with narrower wheels and tyres. These are remarkable figures for a hatchback with a blunt tail.

The platform is pretty standard modern stuff: MacPherson strut front suspension and a four-link independent arrangement at the rear, anti-roll bars, and electric power steering (with the motor located at the rack.

Initially, the engine choice is between a new 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine which uses some of the design features of the latest Mercedes V6 and V8, and a 1.8-litre version of the familiar CDI diesel from the C-class adapted for transverse installation. Both are available with two different power outputs as B180 and B200: 122 and 156PS for the petrol, 109 and 136PS for the diesel.

The transmission choice is between a new, light and compact six-speed manual and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that can also be operated manually from paddles behind the steering wheel.

The higher output versions of both engines are preferable, give adequate performance and yet still claim excellent fuel consumption, but more remarkable is their smoothness and refinement. Careful attention to engine mounting and insulation has paid dividends here and contributes to the big-car feel of the new B-Class.

All engines come with an automatic stop-start system to save fuel (and CO2 and, unlike some such devices, it works well, re-starting quickly and quietly from a light touch on the clutch pedal.

The seven-speed dual clutch DCT transmission is the better choice, reasonably smooth as an automatic (it has Eco and Sport modes and crisply responsive to manual shifts from the paddles. The DCT has no central transmission selector; Drive, Neutral, Reverse and Park are selected from a column stalk, as on the Mercedes S-Class.

The new suspension and, particularly, a lower centre of gravity have brought major improvements to the ride and handling and whilst this is not a sporting car, it is now satisfying to drive. The new steering system has the responsive feel that the old one lacked and, when hurrying on, there is little of the disconcerting understeer that blighted the old model.

So the new B-class drives at least as well as the established cars of the type. What Mercedes hopes will put it in a class apart is the way it is presented and the safety and convenience features that have migrated from its larger cars.

Certainly, the look and feel of the interior has the trademark qualities: leather or 'man-made leather' (surely oxymoronic? and aluminium or wood facia trim, ventilators with chrome surrounds, and electric seat adjusters. A large display screen sits on the top of the facia for clear visibility and is operated by a rotary control alongside the driver’s seat. It can show vehicle systems information and of course navigation instructions but is also available with full internet access.

The spacious rear compartment with almost as much space as a standard wheelbase S-Class can include airline-style tables hinged from the front seat backs. A glass roof has two electric blinds and a sliding front section and the rear windows are heat-insulated and dark-tinted.

Thankfully, Mercedes has retreated from the headlong dash to provide keyless-go (which it originally introduced on the S-Class; the new B has an old-fashioned key to open the car and start the engine.

The panoply of safety devices is available, from Attention Assist (warning signal on the facia, and blind spot warning (lights in the side mirrors to lane-keeping assist (a judder through the steering wheel and Pre-Safe, which tightens the safety belts, and closes the windows and sunroof if it senses an accident is imminent.

Most noteworthy is Collision Prevention Assist which is standard on all versions. A radar system, using a transmitter situated behind the three-pointed star in the grille, it works with Adaptive Brake Assist to warn of too high a closing speed with the vehicle in front and modulate braking using the space available, thereby reducing the possibility of being hit by a following vehicle.

Mercedes reckons this system could reduce the incidence of rear end accidents by 20 per cent and sees it as significant as fitting ESP to the A-class in 1997, adding that it didn't need an elk test to prompt it…

Add to all this the functionality of adjustable rear seats and a large adaptable load area which conceals a spacious compartment beneath, and it is clear that Mercedes has thought long and hard about the B-Class and how to combine the best of the old with greater appeal for a new audience.

But it remains a niche model with few direct competitors. In Europe, the maker invites comparison with the high-roofed Volkswagen Golf Plus and Ford C-Max but both of those are cheaper than the B-Class. Ah, yes, it explains, ‘The difference is they are not Mercedes’.

Jacqueline Hassink & Immo Klink at Kaune Sudendorf Gallery in Cologne

Ground floor: a riot. First floor: a fitting room. That's the contrast you should have in mind when envisaging the encounter of two photo artists in Cologne's Kaune Sudendorf Gallery. In the exhibition, conceived by Immo Klink und Jacqueline Hassink, the two artists present a selection of very special motifs. And even if the subject matter – namely labels, luxury and brand name fetishism – has similar aspects, it is tackled in two very different ways.

The former lawyer, Immo Klink, shows us barricaded up brand name stores like Prada and Gucci Co. which have braced themselves for indiscriminate display window break-ins, looting and riotous demonstrations by using plywood panels to board themselves up. Jacqueline Hassink's photographs portray places where consumerism, merchandising and brand name fetishism have literally reached new levels: she shows us the so-called ‚fitting rooms' in the big fashion boutiques, reserved only for the richest of the rich, where you can dress up in clothes that cost well up into the millions. Unavailable for average Joe on the street to wear.

Jacqueline Hassink is no culprit when it comes to glorifying these topics of fashion, brand names and luxury – just as Immo Klink doesn't want to stir up concerns regarding globalisation or occupy movements. In her work, Hassink addresses the relationship that luxury products have with their environment. Her famous ‚Car Girls' is one such example. The political activist and photographer, Immo Klink, offers us an almost ironic insight into the magic of brands, an enchantment which apparently even their potential, invisible aggressors have difficulties shaking of. Virtually at least, the scene has been set in KS Contemporary – on the first floor, pricey, haute couture ladieswear is tailored to fit, whilst down below on the ground floor, the fight against globalised luxury and economic despotism rages.

Immo Klink was born in Germany in 1972 and has been living in London since 1999. There, Klink did a short stint working in Wolfgang Tilmans' studio. His photos were published in numerous arts and weekly magazines. Regarding his artistic projects, Klink has participated in countless group exhibitions, collaborating with artists such as Andreas Gursky, Wolfgang Tillmans, Allan Sekula and Massimo Vitali. His solo exhibitions have been shown, amongst other places, at the Castilla y León Contemporary Art Museum (MUSAC in Spain, the National Portrait Gallery in London and the Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art in Sunderland.

The conceptual artist and former sculptress Jacqueline Hassink (born 1966 has her roots in the Netherlands but now lives in New York. Her work focuses on the economy's influence on social life and its resulting rituals; a topic that's formed part of her photographic portfolio since 1993. Her path led her from portraying the desks of the world's most powerful business tycoons to international automobile exhibitions, where she developed poses and stagings for her so-called ‚Car Girls'. ‚Fitting Rooms' was conceptualised in various haute couture fashion houses between 2003 and 2010. Hassink is a Visiting Professor at Harvard University.

•  projects dedicated to the motto of providing
shelter
• Long-term cooperation project with Caritas since
2008
• Social projects in Austria and CEE/SEE

Stock exchange listed company S IMMO AG has been supporting
Caritas projects aimed at helping disadvantaged children
and youths in Ukraine and Romania since 2008. In addition,
it co-finances a day centre with a soup kitchen for elderly
people in the Bulgarian village of Pokrovan.

In Austria, S IMMO is supporting the Sonnenmond children’s
hospice in Carinthia for the first time. During the
Christmas campaign, EUR 10 were donated to the project for
every new newsletter subscription and for every tweet about
the campaign. This resulted in the collection and donation
of over EUR 5,000. According to Friedrich Wachernig, Member
of the S IMMO Management Board, «All of the projects
supported by us are dedicated to the theme of providing
shelter and in this way highlight our core business from a
different side – namely the very important social side. Our
selection emphasises our conviction that doing business in
our markets must be combined with a very conscious sense of
social responsibility. »

Hope House in Romania
S IMMO AG financed a Caritas Hope House in Ciumbrud,
Romania, which provides a temporary home for youths. Social
workers help them to find work and a permanent place to
live, and also assist with official business and individual
problems. After their stay in the Hope House, the youths
are given support for at least another six months. Caritas
also provides career, social, legal, and psychological
advice and assistance to children and youths via mobile
units and at the counselling centre in Alba Iulia.

A future for children in Ukraine
Another Caritas project supported by S IMMO AG is a
children’s centre in Kiev. It has 30 places for street
children, social orphans and disadvantaged youths as well
as 15 temporary places for children who are being taken in
by foster families. Children and youths can spend their
free time off the street in the connected day centre.
Caritas operates a vocational training centre in Kiev where
roughly 70 children learn about different occupations every
year. Young people can also take computer and English
courses and job aptitude tests.

Ageing with dignity in Bulgaria
Over 70% of the inhabitants of Pokrovan in Bulgaria are
over the age of 70. They must live on minimal pensions that
are often not even enough to cover the barest necessities.
For this reason, Caritas operates a day centre and a soup
kitchen in this village and arranges medical care for the
elderly population, all with the support of S IMMO AG.
Mobile teams also provide assistance to ill and bedridden
persons.

» is of particular importance to S IMMO. Our social
commitment is focused on long-standing, reliable
cooperation projects: The only way to make a sustainable
positive difference is to serve as a long-term partner,»
said Friedrich Wachernig. In addition to social facilities,
S IMMO supports the Vienna Kunstsupermarkt art sales
project and the Turn On architecture festival.

How to hunt for a job using social media – Chicago Sun

By Sandra guy
Business Reporter sguy@suntimes.com

Nicole Duhoski, founding partner of Chicago-based social-media strategy and public relations firm VineSprout (http://vinesprout.com, says anyone with access to the Internet can make the most of their job search by being smart about social media. Here are her tips for using key words in online profiles, downloading search tools, understanding how to use hashtags and keeping online resumes and other information constantly updated.

"If you spend a bit more time upfront and create solid resources online and thorough social media profiles, you can sit back and let Twitter, Google, recruiters and online connections do all the work for you," Duhoski says.

• Build and develop a personal and professional online brand that reflects your skills, background, passions, experience, and personality. You don't have to hide your identity or your personality just because you are job searching. Being a real person online and having a strong and consistent presence across all networks helps recruiters get to know you, and sets you apart from a list of names and resumes.

• Use the same picture across your networks to help with recognition. Create a vanity URL for Facebook, LinkedIn and other networks. (i.e. facebook.com/nduhoski; linkedin.com/nduhoski

• Do not be shy about telling your online network that you are looking for a new opportunity, and remind them often. Do not try to hide that fact that you are unemployed and in search of a job online.

• Most jobs are found through networking and some of the best jobs are never posted on job boards.

• Create a simple, concise, easy to understand, 30-second job pitch and memorize it. Include it in your Twitter bio, your LinkedIn profile, Facebook and any other social network that you are on. Use it at networking events.

• Reach out to all friends, family and professional contacts and let everyone know that you are looking for a job. When people know exactly what you're looking for, they are more likely to help you and to refer you to their network. Provide them with titles and descriptions and point them to your LinkedIn profile, or personal website with your resume.

• Attend as many networking events as possible. There is no shortage in Chicago. Conferences, local seminars, tweetups, social media/marketing/publicity clubs. Volunteer to work registration and you'll have an opportunity to meet most of the attendees. Connect on LinkedIn within 24 hours.

• If you really want to get creative, Facebook ads, Facebook pages and video resumes, are some of the newer tools people are using to get noticed and stand out from the sea of resumes.

LinkedIn

• Make sure that your profile is updated, and continue to update it regularly to reflect any changes.

• Write your resume/LinkedIn profile for the job you want, not just the job(s you've had. Include keywords that are relevant to the type of job that you are searching for.

• LinkedIn, like most social networks is constantly evolving. Log-in daily and stay abreast of changes to the functionality and features offered.

• Optimize your LinkedIn profile to let recruiters find you. Think about the top three to four keywords that you use to search for jobs, and make sure that they are included in your profile.

• Monitor how often your profile appears in searches and how many people are viewing your profile.

• Update your status and make changes and updates to your profile to stay current in the feeds of your connections. Try changing your headline often to see what works best and what keywords attract more views.

• Upload your resume and portfolio using Box.net.

• Use LinkedIn's Advanced Job Search — Use the "Request Referral" button to find people in your network who know and can connect you to the contact that posted the job listing on LinkedIn.

• Use LinkedIn 'Groups' and 'Answers' to network and demonstrate your expertise in your field.

• Download the 'JobsInsider toolbar' so that you can see if you or any of your LinkedIn contacts are connected to a particular company when you are viewing external job listings on other sites.

• Be reachable. Make sure to include your personal contact information (email address, phone number and URLs for relevant social networks on your resume, business cards and in your email signature. It sounds silly, but a lot of people forget to include their phone number or have outdated email addresses on important networks where people expect to be able to connect like LinkedIn or Facebook.

Twitter:

• Search Twitter for job openings. Search by location, job titles, company names, or hashtags such as #jobs, #job, #jobsearch #jobseeker #career. Monitor keywords that relate to the jobs that you are applying to as well as words like opening, position, etc.

• Follow relevant recruiters and people working in your industry, and people that have your dream job.

• Follow the brands and businesses that you have an interest in working for. Companies often have HR specific handles that are used to announce job openings.

• Use TwitJobSearch: a job search engine for Twitter that aggregates job listings and posts on Twitter.

Google Alerts:

• Set up Google Alerts to help you monitor job leads that never appear on major job boards. Test what works best by starting with a broad search string, and then play with your keywords and narrow your search until your results are completely relevant.

o (Chicago AND marketing AND (manager OR director AND (position OR listing OR job

• Set up a Google alert for your own name to monitor your personal brand.

Urbanising Malaysia calls for the adoption of smart-growth principles

<!–GA_googleFillSlot(«Business_Story_toptext»;–>

STRONG emphasis given by the Government in strengthening the economic attractiveness of Greater Kuala Lumpur, improving the overall public transportation system, improving linkages in major growth centers and other initiatives identified under the various will have great implications on future development of cities.

These NKEAs will influence the direction as well as speed of growth of the cities where the projects are carried out, which will then influence the property market of these cities.

Realising the high speed of urbanisation rate in Malaysia and the inefficiency that could be created by urban sprawl, it is of high importance that sustainable development be given due consideration. This has become the main focal point of discussions in property seminars and conferences in Malaysia and the region.

At the recently held The 3rd Congress of Asian Association of Urban Regional Studies, the theme was Survival City and Region: Risk or Sustainable Planning, speakers and participants were all in agreement on the need to plan, design and invest in smarter cities where sustainable planning becomes the guiding criteria.

Smart cities require skilled workers and innovative ideas. These cities must address green and sustainable issues and be resilient against natural hazards. The President of Thai Planners Society, highlighted that sustainablility did not always translate into higher cost of building cities as there were natural methods to incorporate green issues in property development but required innovative techniques to suit the local environment.

It was also highlighted by Annette Dixon, the ‘s Country Director for Malaysia in the November 2011 edition of the Malaysia Economic Monitor that "as cities concentrate a growing share of the national economy, it is imperative that they have systems to manage natural hazards and prevent them from becoming human and economic disasters.

Malaysian cities are especially vulnerable to floods and landslides. To reduce the risks related to these hazards, Malaysia would benefit from environmental restoration and integration of risk reduction into development planning".

To lead the move towards sustainable development, one of the key thrusts of the National Housing Policy 2011 is to promote sustainability in the housing sector by promoting green technologies and features, and encouraging urban renewal and redevelopment. In Malaysia, this growing awareness on sustainable development has resulted in various commercial as well as residential developments using "green features" as one of the development concepts and theme or their unique selling features.

Ken Bangsar and 28 Mont Kiara are two examples of outstanding high rise development employing green features and technologies. Sunway Rymba Hills and Cahaya SPK Shah Alam are examples of landed residential development that integrate natural forest and open park. Launched last month, KL Eco City is going to be the country’s first integrated green development targeting GBI and LEED certifications.

It can be concluded that it is becoming a "must" for property players from planners, architects, engineers to developers to take initiatives to create liveable cities by incorporating smart-growth principles in their planning and design.

We expect more new development and redevelopment projects to adopt similar principles, In the long run, smart-growth principles will add value not only in terms of capital appreciation of the properties but also social and economic liveability of entire communities.

Urban renewal and redevelopment projects are currently taking place in Kuala Lumpur city center and mature cities like Petaling Jaya. These are indications of the need for cities to grow vertically to create economies of scale in terms of space consumption and the need to minimise vehicular movement.

The current redevelopment of AngkasaRaya (Aurora Tower@KLCC and Bok House (W Kuala Lumpur, The Hotel and Residences and the proposed redevelopment of Hotel Istana, Kompleks Antarabangsa and Crowne Plaza into a mix of commercial and residential uses will encourage more owners of older buildings in the city center to take similar steps.

In Petaling Jaya, owners of older industrial buildings are redeveloping their land for commercial use. Approximately 16 million sq ft of prime office space will be completed by 2016 in Kuala Lumpur city center and its immediate areas, increasing the total supply by 22% to 86 million sq ft.

With the current slow take up in office space, rent is expected to remain stable in the next few quarters, hovering between RM5.50psf and RM6.50psf.

About 11,000 new condominiums with prices ranging from RM500psf to more than RM1,000psf will be completed by 2014. Due to the high supply of newly completed condominiums within the Golden Triangle Area and Embassy Row, average rental rate for selected existing condominiums has declined by almost 5% from RM4.66psf to RM4.44psf and from RM3.49psf to RM3.31psf respectively.

Several newly completed condominiums have even lowered their asking rental rate by almost 10%. We expect the leasing market for condominium will continue to be more challenging especially for bigger units though take up rate for new projects in most cases is very encouraging, with a significant percentage of local buyers.

The retail market will see more neighbourhood malls in the Klang Valley completed between 2012 and 2015 adding about 7.5 million sq ft to the current total supply of 51.4 million sq ft. Most of these new malls are located in high growth areas such as Petaling Jaya, Kelana Jaya, Cheras, Setapak, Kota Damansara, Puchong and UEP Subang Jaya.

Will the growth of residential and commercial properties slow down in 2012? Looking at the numbers provided by the Statistics Department and RAM Economics, average annual transaction growth rate of these properties has continued to slow down from 12.8% (1991-2000 to 5.9% (2001-2009.

With the growing population, high percentage of working population and growth in employment supported by various throughout the country, we expect the Malaysian economy to provide a conducive environment for the property market to continue to be one of the key economic contributors.

Senator Datuk Abdul Rahim Rahman is the Executive Chairman of Rahim Co group of companies. This is his last column for StarBizWeek.

Top Ten Detroit Lions Stories of 2011: Lions play it smart and sign key NFL …

Martin Mayhew

«Coming in at No. 7 in our list of top 10 Lions stories of 2011, Detroit Lions General Manager Martin Mayhew showed his savvy with his team’s free agent acquisitions.

ALLEN PARK — Detroit Lions General Manager Martin Mayhew showed why it is important to trust your gut, not the knee jerk reactions of fans.

Mayhew re-signed Chris Houston, and signed free-agent cornerback Eric Wright, linebacker Stephen Tulloch and Justin Durant this offseason.

Houston has five interceptions this season, while Wright has four. Meanwhile, both linebackers have stepped in and exceeded expectations.

While many Lions fans were convinced Detroit should sign free-agent cornerbacks Nnamdi Asomugha or Johnathan Joseph prior to this season, Mayhew proved the right decisions are not always the popular ones.

Smart Shopper: Paint Brushes

If one of your New Year's resolutions is to spruce up your home, this no doubt includes a painting project. Achieving excellent results depends largely on choosing the right tools – especially high-quality brushes. A top-of-the-line brush generally will hold more paint, streak less, give a better finish and last longer. Brushes can be highly useful for painting areas of any size and for all types of paint.

ECONOMY THREE-INCH FLAT UTILITY BRUSH

BUYERS' TIPS

To choose the brushes best-suited for your project, ask yourself the following questions:

* Are you applying water- or oil-based paints?

* What types of surfaces will you be painting?

* What sizes are your work surfaces?

* Will you be working in corners and/or on edges?

Quality, Type, Size and Care: Paint brushes are widely available at low prices, so it can be tempting to go with a bargain. Good brushes, though, produce better results faster, and when properly cared for are more cost-effective in the long run.

High-Quality Features: A few key features will indicate the quality of the brush. The metal band, known as the ferrule, should be non-corrosive and attached to the brush with screws or rivets, as opposed to a slip-on attachment. Many high-quality brushes have a comfortable handle made of finished wood rather than plastic.

There should be multiple spacers separating the bristles to keep them in place and create larger paint reservoirs, and bristles should be densely packed.

Before fleeing to Canada, suspect allegedly lived a life of luxury complete …

China’s most-wanted man, who was deported from Canada in July after a decade-long legal battle, has admitted to his crimes and will now be handed over to prosecutors, state media reported Friday.

Beijing had sought the deportation of Lai Changxing for years, accusing him of running a multi-billion dollar smuggling ring in the southeastern city of Xiamen in the 1990s.

The move brings authorities a step closer to a conclusion in one of China’s most lurid, long-running corruption cases.

Prosecutors indicted Lai for allegedly masterminding a network that smuggled everything from cigarettes to cars and oil and bribed dozens of government workers between 1996 and 1999, China’s state broadcaster CCTV reported.

Lai and other key members of the syndicate have «confessed to the facts of the smuggling and bribery charges without concealing anything,» the report said.

The «legal rights» of Lai and the other suspects were «fully guaranteed,» with Lai able to meet with his lawyer, state radio added.

Lai became China’s most-wanted man after he fled to Canada in 1999 and fought extradition for 12 years.

Nothing had been heard of him since he was returned to China over the summer.

Liquor and prostitutes
Before fleeing to Canada, he lived a life of luxury in China complete with a bulletproof Mercedes Benz. He is alleged to have run a mansion in which he plied officials with liquor and prostitutes.

At the time, state TV splashed pictures of the network’s allegedly ill-gotten gains: A tiger skin rug laid out on a conference table, confiscated cars belonging to corrupt bureaucrats, a sack of gold rings, and a picture of a young woman, said to be a lover kept for one official by Lai.

Chinese media have said Lai’s alleged smuggling operation was valued at $10 billion.

China put more than 300 suspects on trial and sentenced 14 to death, including provincial officials and a former vice minister of public security, in a case Beijing has used for a propaganda campaign against corruption.

China’s Communist Party has struggled to control widespread practices of embezzlement, taking kickbacks, and influence peddling that have degraded public faith and sometimes led to violent protest.

In Canada, Lai had avoided deportation by arguing he could face the death penalty or be tortured and would not get a fair trial in his home country.

But that legal battle ended in July when a federal court in Vancouver ruled Lai should not be considered a refugee and upheld his deportation.

China promised Canada that Lai would not get the death penalty in 2001 when then-President Jiang Zemin sent the Canadian prime minister at the time, Jean Chretien, a diplomatic note with assurances Lai would not be executed if returned.

Loopholes exploited
Lai’s alleged crimes occurred in the special economic zone of Xiamen in Fujian province in the mid-1990s when Jia Qinglin, now the ruling Communist Party’s fourth most senior leader, was the province’s party boss.

Beijing has accused Lai’s business empire, the Yuanhua Group, of bribing officials to allow a massive smuggling ring. Jia’s wife, Lin Youfang, was among those implicated in the scandal. She denied any wrongdoing.

Lai admitted in a 2009 interview with Toronto’s Globe and Mail newspaper that he had avoided taxes by exploiting loopholes in the law, but he denies bribery charges.

Lai may face life imprisonment, state media has reported. But some legal experts and human rights activists have said it was unlikely Lai could receive a fair trial in China.

Greetings from New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS, La. — Welcome to the football capital of the season, home of the Allstate Sugar Bowl, a Saints game on Sunday, and the BCS national championship. The Hokies took over the Mercedes-Benz Superdome for practice this afternoon, and several of the defensive assistants were made available to the media, along with Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer. All of the coaches were laid-back, in good spirits, and defensive line coach Charley Wiles was particularly entertaining and engaging.

The good news: There haven’t been any injuries yet that will sideline any Hokies for Tuesday’s game against Michigan. The hard artificial surface is beginning to wear on some of the players, and they’re getting adjusted to the indoor lights, but the controlled climate will be good for …

The bad news: Virginia Tech is down two kickers, and Beamer said today that recent practices haven’t provided any answer. And no, Danny Coale won’t be receiving, punting, returning punts AND kicking field goals. Starter Cody Journell spent almost a week in jail after felony breaking-and-entering charges, and then one day after he was released, his backup, fifth-year senior Tyler Weiss was sent home on a Greyhound bus for breaking curfew.

Justin Myer is expected to handle the placekicking duties against Michigan, but Michael Branthover is also an option. Myer has a strong leg, but he has struggled with his accuracy. He is 0-for-2 against Virginia Tech. Prediction? If he has to make a choice — go for it or kick a field goal, Beamer might try and goferit when he usually wouldn’t in some situations.

The majority of questions today were about how Virginia Tech plans to account for Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson, and it’s the key to the game. While the Hokies’ defense has spent plenty of time going against former quarterback Tyrod Taylor in practice, defensive backs coach Torrian Gray said Robinson is faster than Taylor, and that nobody on the team could simulate what Robinson does. This will be a big test for a young defense, but Beamer said linebacker Alonzo Tweedy (ankle is close enough to 100 percent.

«I don't know that he's totally 100 percent, but I think he's close enough that he can be back to the old Tweedy," Beamer said. "We need that. I think he gives you some options back in there defensively and on our special teams.»

Gray said there’s been an «edginess» to the Hokies’ defense in their bowl game preparations, so it sounds like the guys are ready to redeem themselves from their performance against Clemson, but this will be an even bigger challenge.
