Bashara murder witness comes forward

The Local 4 Defenders have learned that a neighbor of Bob Bashara has come forward and told police investigators he saw a man who looked like Joe Gentz driving Jane Bashara’s Mercedes-Benz sports utility vehicle out of the Bashara garage on Jan. 24, the night of Jane’s murder.

The same witness also said about the same time Bob Bashara moved his Lincoln Navigator so the Mercedes-Benz could be pulled out of the garage.

This new witness could be key for prosecutors.

«If they have a witness that says, ‘I saw on this date at this time Joe Gentz leaving the house,’ then that’s a pretty significant statement and that’s going to be used pretty powerfully, I think, by the prosecution,» said legal expert Todd Flood.

Another witness also recently told police that Gentz approached him and asked for help carrying out Jane Bashara’s murder. That local man has now been questioned by investigators.

Both witnesses could be critical to the case.

«It is something that solidifies their case. If someone else can say that, ‘I listened to Joe. Joe said this to me,’ and that affirms a consistent statement that Joe is telling the truth, because that’s what you want to find out, is Joe telling the truth. if that adds up, it solidifies the case for them, » said Flood.

The Local 4 Defenders are told the evidence taken from the Bashara’s Grosse Pointe Park home, including blood samples, have been thoroughly tested. The results still rest in the hands of investigators.

The witness statements and evidence collected at the home could help solve the mystery of who strangled 56-year-old Jane Bashara.

She was found Jan. 25 in her SUV parked in a Detroit alley.

No charges have been brought forward in the case.

Mercedes Assimilates Siri with Digital DriveStyle App

Mercedes-Benz  Tuesday that company's new A-class line of cars will integrate with the iPhone in a way that's never been done before. The firm has developed a free app called "Digital DriveStyle" that will allow access to key features of an iPhone, including Siri voice-control.

Drivers of A-class cars fitted with a "Drive Kit Plus for the Apple iPhone" will be able to access features on their phone using controls on the center armrest. And, of course, all of this is meant to meld with the attractive look of the interior of the vehicle.

This integration will allow drivers to send messages, select music, check weather and stocks, and access their calendar. Facebook and Twitter will also be accessible, allowing for connectivity while on the road.

The "Digital DriveStyle App" will also include a personalized internet radio station, advanced Garmin navigation, text-to-speech from social networks, and "Car Finder," which automatically stores the vehicle's location and can provide directions on how to return to it. Siri is also integrated into the app.

The iPhone will be connected through an interface that allows it to display on the screen in the car's dash, and of course it will also power and charge the iPhone when connected.  The interface was created by a team of designers and engineers in Palo Alto, CA to be intuitive and appropriate for in-vehicle use, making it safer to operate. Access to many functions through Siri's natural speech interface can help make it easier to operate as well.

The A-class is targeted at younger drivers, those who are likely to have a "digital lifestyle" in the first place. Even entry-level Audio 20 systems will be able to access all of these functions, meaning that it won't be limited to the higher-priced audio packages.

The "Digital DriveStyle App" and the "Drive Kit Plus for the Apple iPhone" are scheduled to debut at the Geneva Motor Show beginning March 8th. They are also to be included in B-, C-, and E-Class vehicles in the fall.

Mercedes’ key to outdoor ads – brand

Mercedes' key to outdoor ads

Mercedes-Benz Vans and agency Lukas Lindemann Rosinski took their Key To Viano campaign to Berlin's Friedrichstrasse underground station, with travellers able to control digital advertising displays using their own remote car keys.

The car maker deployed a dozen displays at the station, with and each one's Viano van aiming to demonstrate the vehicle's huge storage capacity.

Every time a remote car key – no matter the brand – was operated, the side door of a digital Viano opened, and an array of passengers descended, 'sometimes weird, sometimes colourful, sometimes from another world'.

Mercedes-Benz updates A-Class infotainment system, focuses on iPhone and Siri integration

The new Mercedes-Benz A-Class is «always on»: Mercedes-Benz puts the iPhone® on wheels

Stuttgart. Mercedes-Benz is making smartphones mobile and ensuring that such electronic assistants will in future be fully linked into the car’s infotainment system.

First off the blocks is the Apple® iPhone®, which Mercedes-Benz has now integrated comprehensively into the user experience concept of the new A-Class, as the first automotive manufacturer in the world to take this step. Thanks to a new «Digital DriveStyle App», developed in-house, together with the «Drive Kit Plus for the Apple® iPhone®», drivers can now access all the key content of their Apple® iPhone® through the in-vehicle display and enjoy safe and convenient operation of the device via the Controller on the center armrest. The attractive ‘look’ is ensured by the revolutionary user interface design. In a further world premiere, Mercedes-Benz will enable access to the voice-based intelligent companion Siri™ in the vehicle. This allows natural speech input, without the need for specific commands, to send messages, select music tracks and check the weather forecast or stock prices, as well as to make appointments. All the iPhone® integration functions can be used even with the entry-level Audio 20 system.

This seamless integration of the Apple® iPhone® into the vehicle, in conjunction with the new revolutionary user interface design, means that Mercedes-Benz is now able to offer the Facebook generation its natural home on four wheels, in the form of the new A-Class. Along with Facebook, Twitter and so on, the «Digital DriveStyle App» developed by Daimler offers further services and content to suit the digital lifestyle and will be available to download free of charge from the Apple® iTunes® store. Its highlights include:

Personalised internet radio by AUPEO! Personal Radio, which offers radio stations that compile an individual program for listeners and recommend similar music by genre or artists based on personal taste.

The advanced navigation software from Garmin, with internet-based real-time traffic information, online POI searches and 3D map display, all of which work even in combination with the entry-level multimedia system Audio 20

A socially interactive experience involving «sharing», «posting» and the integration of music and other content from social networks including text-to-speech.

An intuitive ‘Car Finder’ which automatically stores the vehicle’s location. Pedestrian navigation makes it completely easy to find your way back to the car.

Access to the voice-based intelligent companion Siri™.

New here is also the contextual and location-based display of menu content under the headings «Social», «Media» and «Places». The basic logic behind this was presented by Daimler for the first time in January of this year at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES in Las Vegas. Appearing under the heading «Social», for example, are the various friends and latest news from the social networks.

The user interface design is unique and revolutionary. Transparent symbols are illuminated in red to create three-dimensionally arranged navigation levels. Within the three-dimensional illustration provided by this menu structure, the user can move intuitively between the various functions in fluid, animated transitions. The user interface concept was designed and implemented by designers and engineers in the Mercedes-Benz research and development center in Palo Alto, California/USA. Enlarging the display of content on the screen to an appropriate format for use in a vehicle and allowing it to be controlled through the ergonomically positioned Controller on the center armrest makes operating the system both safe and easy.

The iPhone® is connected through an interface developed by Mercedes-Benz Accessories GmbH. This allows content to be fed directly from the graphics output of the device to the display of the vehicle. At the same time, the iPhone® is both powered and charged automatically while it is being used.

Full iPhone® integration is not only possible in conjunction with the COMAND Online multimedia system. All functions, including navigation, can also be used even with the entry-level Audio 20 system. Mercedes-Benz is thus making it possible for the A-Class’s younger target group in particular to continue their digital lifestyle seamlessly inside the vehicle. Both the «Digital DriveStyle App» and the «Drive Kit Plus for the Apple® iPhone®» will be making their debut in the new A-Class, which will be celebrating its world premiere at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, and are also planned to be available from autumn 2012 for the B-, C- and E-Class.

Always at your service: the voice-based intelligent companion Siri™ As the first automotive manufacturer to do so, Mercedes-Benz will be introducing Siri™ in a vehicle with easy access to it from the «Digital DriveStyle App». While conventional voice recognition software demands the use of specific spoken commands, Siri™ understands natural speech patterns and will even ask questions in return should more information be needed in order to complete a given task.

Siri™ is a function of the latest iPhone® generation, 4S, and acts as a personal assistant. Given verbal instructions, for example, it will access the personal calendar to make or decline requests for appointments or meetings. SMS text messages can be dictated or read out, and emails sent. Siri™ can also be used as a convenient way of accessing the complete range of music stored on an iPhone® or to request the latest weather forecast. Always up-to-date: COMAND Online with Cloud technology and

Mercedes-Benz App Shop Safe and convenient access to the internet on the move is already available in a whole series of Mercedes-Benz models: the fully integrated multimedia system COMAND Online was introduced in 2011. As well as innovative applications such as Google Local Search including Google Street View and Panoramio, Mercedes-Benz is the only manufacturer to offer the option of sending individually preconfigured routes from Google Maps on a PC to the vehicle. The internet connection that is required for the functions in COMAND Online is established via a mobile telephone Bluetooth link and a secure Virtual Private Network (VPN. Mercedes-Benz is firmly convinced that the future lies with cloud computing. The software used in the COMAND Online applications is not stored in the vehicle, but runs off the Daimler Vehicle Backend. The advantage of this is that applications can be continually updated in the cloud, and new applications released to Mercedes-Benz customers, without the need to visit a workshop.

In this sense on March 31st, 2012 a new Mercedes-Benz App to access News will be available to COMAND Online customers. Additionally, Mercedes-Benz Apps for COMAND Online will be offered soon in the new Mercedes-Benz App Shop. The first two Mercedes-Benz Apps to become available in the App Shop will be the Parking Finder and Morningstar Finance, that offers access to stock prices.

It is planned to introduce a dozen or so new applications each year. To this end, Daimler has set up App Development Groups in both Palo Alto, California/USA, and Bangalore, India.

Mercedes Bringing Siri To Its A Class

Mercedes Bringing Siri To Its A Class

Mercedes Benz has always been at the fore front of automobile technology. 4 wheel independent suspension in 1931, crash test program in 1958, antilock brakes in 1978. Some of these were pioneered by Mercedes, most were standard in the S-Class years before they were standard on any other manufactures cars.

Now we get the great announcement that Mercedes is bring Siri to it's economical A-Class. This is part of Mercedes and their smart car initiative introduced at CES. Siri will easily be accessed through the "Digital DriveStyle App." With this app you will easily be able to control your phone with the push of a button on the steering wheel. Things like Texts, weather, and music will be able to be controlled with Siri.

The technology to seamlessly integrate the iPhone into the A-Class was a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Apple to develop the Drive Kit Plus for the Apple iPhone. With this new kit drivers can now access all the key content of their Apple iPhone through the in-vehicle touch screen display or you can use it via the controller on the center armrest.

Now if they could get Siri to drive your car for you, then we could go from New York to San Fransisco in …… Sorry, I don't understand New York to San Fransisco, do a web search?

As of the press release there is no current release date for the A-Class in the United States.

Two Men at Dickens World

At Dickens World, I was lucky to be joined by the excellent art photographer Immo Klink, whose photos of the park and its workers turned out to be a perfect visual analogue for my experience.

And then there is this photo.

It was taken not by Immo Klink but by an automatic camera hidden deep in the fetid bowels of the Great Expectations boat ride, where it captured this magical moment: my friend Asad and me just after we plunged backward down a ramp and were hit by a giant splash. I'm the one who looks like he's having a psychotic break. (Earlier in the ride, I lost my mind and started laughing like a madman. Asad has a slight smile, but it should not be mistaken for a smile of joy — it's a smile of sadness, confusion, defeat, resignation. He was extremely upset about getting his coat wet in January, in England, and I think he was also a little put off by my manic screeching, and at this point he really, really just wanted to get out of Dickens World. The photo doesn't appear with my essay, but it is described in it as follows: "We looked like a perfectly Dickensian pair: me in a mania of wild-eyed laughter, my friend resigned and unhappy — comedy and tragedy side by side, 'in as regular alternation,' as Dickens put it in 'Oliver Twist,' 'as the layers of red and white in a side of streaky bacon.'"

A few words about Asad, who appears in the essay only as a shadowy figure: my anonymous "friend." In reality, he was a huge part of my trip: driver, companion, interpreter, guinea pig, canary in the coal mine. Asad and I met 10 years ago in grad school, where I found him to be so intimidatingly smart — so effortlessly fluent about esoteric subjects that I'd never even heard of — that I almost dropped out of the program after two weeks. I stuck with it, though, and eventually Asad and I became friends. He's still the most naturally critical person I know — not in the narrow sense of being negative about things, but in the large and exciting sense of taking things apart, analyzing them, concocting theories. Walking around with him feels like carrying a philosopher in your pocket.

Because we studied Dickens together at school, and because Asad lives in London now, it seemed only natural for me to bully him into coming to Dickens World. He agreed and, true to form, kept up a brilliant running commentary about everything we saw.

In my favorite picture from the trip, Asad stands on top of a very high railing in order to peer ecstatically over the wall of Miss Havisham's garden, still discoursing.

Asad was on fire, interpretively, for the entire trip. Only Dickens World, it turned out, could make his critical motor grind to a halt. As soon as we entered the park, it was like he'd been shot by an arrow. You could feel the energy draining out of him. I started writing down his comments in my notebook and, reading over them now, I can still feel the spirit departing his earthly form:

"This is the ultimate victory of film over literature."

"This is awesome! This sucks!"

"It's a set of impoverished televisions that cannot cut from one scene to another. "

"Soggy, dank, exploitative."

"This is too horrible of a misapprehension of everything."

"I just feel bad for everyone now."

And that, in a nutshell, was our trip to Dickens World. God bless us one and all.

CA Immo sums up the first year of operation following the acquisition of Europolis

It has been a year since the acquisition of the East European regional offices of Europolis by the Austrian investor CA Immo. Today, the company's portfolio in Poland comprises seven office buildings, two office parks, and two warehouse parks – more than half a million square metres of rental space in total, which makes the company a leading investor in the market for commercial space in this part of Europe. The first year of combined operation turned out to be very busy and successful. The CA Immo team scored successful negotiations and won new leases. In 2011, they leased out more than 160,000 m² in office and warehouse space.

Andrzej Mikołajczyk, Managing Director of CA Immo in Poland, summarizes the first year of combined operation: "It was not an easy year. Any business combination involves the need to take care of many organisational aspects which are not directly related to the core business. This makes me view the results for the year 2011 as all the more satisfactory, and the new CA Immo Poland, which takes advantage of the synergies between the two strong players, as one of the unquestionable leaders of Poland’s real estate market.»

The largest transaction in the office portfolio was the lease extension of 2,600 m² of space to Shell, a global fuel industry leader, which decided to remain at the Business Center Bitwy Warszawskiej building at least until 2017. In total, the building at Bitwy Warszawskiej Street had lease extensions executed for more than 4,000 m².

In the Warsaw Financial Center, which has also housed the new CA Immo since March 2011, the largest transaction was an agreement with DLA Piper Wiater law firm, which extended its lease of 2,300 m². Other significant transactions were: an agreement for 1,900 m² with Wyborowa SA, a leader in the spirit industry, which decided to remain in the building for another 5 years, and the addition of 1,900 m² to the offices of Kompania Piwowarska, which extended its lease until 2017. New lessees included two international concerns Halliburton and Alstom, a brokerage house of JP Morgan, and Fortum, a Finnish energy company. In total, last year the Warsaw Financial Center executed leases for more than 13,000 m² of office space.

As far as the Warsaw Towers is concerned, the two most significant leases were executed with the existing tenants. Procter Gamble, one of the largest FMCG global firms, increased its rental space by 1,400 m², whereas Korporacja Ubezpieczeń Kredytów Eksportowych SA (Export Credit Insurance Corporation, which insures trade transactions of Polish businesses, decided to remain at the office building for another 5 years and extended its lease of 1,800 m² of space. The Warsaw Towers also won three new lessees, who leased a total of nearly 700 m² of space. Thanks to the recent transactions, 100 per cent of the building's office space has been leased out and only commercial space remains available.

The 6th Floor Blog: Two Men at Dickens World

Audible Magic Granted Three New US Patents for Content Recognition Innovations

LOS GATOS, Calif., Feb 29, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE –
Audible
Magic Corporation, the leader in automated content recognition (ACR
solutions and services, today announced that the U.S. Patent Office has
granted it three new patents for its innovative work in automated
content recognition (ACR technology, a key enabler in the fast emerging
Smart (or «connected» TV and Social TV marketplaces worldwide. The
patents, which bring Audible Magic’s total to 18
U.S. and European patent awards, demonstrate the company’s
consistent, ongoing commitment to provide unique new capabilities to
both device manufacturers and applications developers who embed ACR into
their solutions.

Each of the newly awarded patents tackles a different facet of current
ACR challenges. The first, U.S.
Patent #8,006,314, is a system that identifies an unknown piece of digital
content by analyzing its metrics and then matching these with known
content for identification. The second, U.S.
Patent #8,082,150, is a system that receives audio data from
an unknown work and checks it against known audio data to see if there
is a match. And the third, U.S.
Patent #8,086,445, is an invention that reduces the size of the
reference database, allowing for a more efficient identification process
on systems with limited compute resources.

Together with the company’s previously awarded patents and growing
portfolio of ACR solutions and services, these three new innovations
have helped strengthen Audible Magic’s competitive position as it
pursues Smart TV, Social TV, Interactive Advertising and other
opportunities. In recent months, for example, the company has announced
numerous technology partnerships with other companies focused on these
markets.

«Virtually every device that plays in this space from TVs to tablets and
smart phones must have some form of ACR technology embedded in it to
provide the highly interactive, highly engaging experience today’s
consumers crave,» said Jay Friedman, VP of Marketing for Audible Magic.
«This is an enormous opportunity for us, and we are committed to making
the most of it. Since our founding, we have been a leader in this area,
and, as these new patent awards illustrate, we are continuing to build
upon our leadership position through unceasing innovation.»

Audible Magic also has additional patents pending. The company expects
these to be awarded in the first half of 2012.

Key advisor to Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation is skeptical about links …

When Lady Gaga launches her Born This Way foundation today at Harvard, she’ll be teaming up with some awfully smart people. It’s telling that Gaga connected with the Berkman Center — Harvard’s center for the «internet and society,» and the former home of Danah Boyd, a rockstar researcher at Microsoft who is responsible for some of our best data on how kids’s behavior — on and offline — is informed by and integrated with social media. Boyd is queer, a former raver and hacker, and possessor of a brilliant mind: she just got back from the World Economic Forum in Davos and was recently on the cover of Fast Company. So it’s certainly not strange to see Boyd playing a prominent role in the BTW Foundation: she’s co-editing one of the Foundation’s first big research projects, a series of papers which include a survey of anti-bullying legislation and a list of dos-and-don’ts for educators confronting bullying in schools.

One hopes Gaga and Oprah know what they’re in for. Anyone familiar with Boyd’s work knows that she likes to pose tough questions and isn’t afraid to take unpopular stances. A few days ago, she co-authored a piece for Huffington Post defending Dharun Ravi, the Rutgers University student who is on trial for inviting friends to clanestinely watch his roommate — Tyler Clementi, a young gay man who later killed himself — have sex with another man. «Tyler Clementi's suicide is a tragedy,» Boyd wrote. «We should all be horrified that a
teenager felt the need to take his life in our society. But in our
frustration, we must not prosecute Dharun Ravi before he has had his day
in court. We must not be bullies ourselves. «

Boyd is concerned, in a larger sense, that adults’ fear of their children being bullied has gone overboard. In December, she collected some of her most controversial ideas into a single blog post. «I'm not confident that our war on bullying is taking us down the right
path,» she wrote. «I'm worried about the unintended consequences of our public
discourse and I'm worried about the implications that our decisions have
on youth, particularly in this high-stakes arena. » She worried that a «moral panic» had set in around the issue of kids talking to strangers online; recalling her own queer teen years, she says that interacting with anonymous adults online helped her figure out who she was. She took aim at Dan Savage’s «It Gets Better» project and asked whether it actually makes things worse for gay teens. She described arrests in the wake of the Phoebe Prince case — a high-profile instance of teen bullying in Massachusetts — as a witch hunt. And, on the basis of a conversation in a tent at a pre-millennial rave, declared that some students at Columbine dropped out not because of the shootings but because of the press coverage afterwards. Her conclusion: increased media attention to bullying — something that will certainly result from the work of Lady Gaga’s Born This Way foundation — may actually «cause harm to youth.»

Boyd isn’t asking these questions spuriously — she’s earned the right to ask them by putting the research behind it, including her assertion that «most bullying is reciprocal» — but I can’t help but wonder whether the PR folks managing Gaga’s foundation rollout have any idea who they’ve hired. The good news for them is that they’ve got one of the smartest, hardest-working, and most fearless researchers in the country on the payroll. Then again, depending on how they look at it, that may also be the bad news: this is not someone who is known for pulling punches. In academia, that’s made her a hero. But she’s about to enter a new world of celebrity scholarship — one that tends to have far less tolerance for nuance. Last September, in New York state, a 14-year-old boy killed himself after being bullied for being gay. If something similar happens again next year, I have a feeling that the Born This Way Foundation will have something to say about it. But it probably won’t sound anything like the New York Times op-ed that Boyd co-authored in the wake of that September tragedy — in which she warned about the evils of . . . «antibullying rhetoric.

A few words about Asad, who appears in the essay only as a shadowy figure: my anonymous "friend." CA Immo sums up the first year of operation following the acquisition of Europolis

XXI Century Invest.

The Company also notes that as a result of the term loan restructurings announced on 3 August, 2011 the Company owes US$4 million to («Grenheim». Grenheim is 100 per cent controlled by DCH.

A further announcement will be made in due course.
