Bombardier Wins Order to Supply TWINDEXX Vario Double-deck Multiple Unit …

First call-off by Deutsche Bahn of variable double-deck multiple units for regional transport

Berlin, March 30, 2012 – Bombardier Transportation will deliver 16 BOMBARDIER TWINDEXX Vario multiple units to Deutsche Bahn AG (DB AG for operation on the Kiel-Hamburg and Flensburg-Hamburg railway lines. DB AG was awarded a contract to operate services on these regional lines in a Europe-wide tender process. The order is valued at approximately 160 million euro ($208 million US and is part of a framework agreement between Bombardier and DB AG from December 2008. DB AG has already ordered 135 of the variable double-deck coaches for intercity transport as well as 18 intermediate coaches and three double-deck power cars for regional services.

Each of the 16 new four-car TWINDEXX Vario trains comprises two double-deck power cars and two intermediate coaches. The new trains will operate on the network LVS Schleswig-Holstein with speeds of up to 160 km/h. The trains are due to be delivered in the second half of 2014.

With high-floor entry and LVS’ new interior design, the trains offer improved passenger comfort including more legroom and large storage spaces for luggage and bicycles. Wide doors allow passengers to enter and exit the trains quickly, especially during peak travel times. The centre buffer coupling enables double traction operation, allowing seamless travel without the need for passengers to change trains in Neumünster. The trains’ single car concept means they can be lengthened or shortened easily to meet varying passenger demand.

«Bombardier’s innovative TWINDEXX Vario trains have proven themselves over many years of service,» said Michael Clausecker, Chairman of the Management Board, Bombardier Transportation Germany. «With this order, we will be supplying Deutsche Bahn with the 2,000thof these modern double-deck coaches. Their variability in length, configuration and interior design is one of the key reasons for our trains’ great success. We are delighted that they will continue to form the backbone of modern and efficient public transportation in northern Germany. «

The TWINDEXX Vario power cars are equipped with the reliable and energy efficient BOMBARDIER MITRAC 1000 propulsion and control system. One of the advantages of this system is that it allows trains to accelerate quickly to an optimum speed. The double-deck coaches are built at Bombardier’s Görlitz plant in Germany. The bogies are manufactured at its site in Siegen, Germany, and the propulsion and control system is manufactured at its site in Västerås, Sweden.

Bombardier double-deck trains move millions of passengers on local and regional rail networks each day in countries including Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, Belgium, Luxembourg, Poland, Israel and the United States.

High capacity BOMBARDIER INNOVIA Monorail 300 system and innovative BOMBARDIER CITYFLO 650 technology are winners in Sao Paulo

BERLIN, GERMANY–(Marketwire – March 30, 2012 – Bombardier Transportation, the world leader in rail transportation technology, has received the prestigious award for System Supplier of the Year at the 2012 Revista Ferroviaria Awards, held in Sao Paulo, Brazil. In consortium with the Brazilian civil contractors Queiroz Galvao and OAS, Bombardier will design, supply and install a 24 km, 17 station INNOVIA Monorail 300 system, with the CITYFLO 650 communications-based train control (CBTC technology that enables short 75 second headways between trains.

The new line will serve as an extension of Metro Sao Paulo’s Line 2 between the urban areas of Vila Prudente and Cidade Tiradentes. A total of 54 new monorail trains will operate on this line, carrying as many as 1,000 passengers each. This journey currently takes almost two hours and the new INNOVIA Monorail system will reduce the journey time to approximately 50 minutes, benefiting more than 500,000 users daily.

«This award recognizes Bombardier’s focus on providing truly innovative mobility solutions,» said Andre Guyvarch, President, Brazil, Bombardier Transportation. «The new high capacity INNOVIA Monorail 300 system offers a transportation capacity similar to that of a metro, yet the light infrastructure required reduces the construction price and the implementation schedule by up to 50%, bringing quality-of-life benefits to passengers sooner and more cost-effectively.»

The most high profile projects and developments of the year are selected by the editorial board of the Revista Ferroviaria magazine. These are then voted on by readers of the magazine and its online version.

SPARKASSEN IMMOB. : S IMMO AG: Collaborations with institutions of higher …

Last week, the listed company S IMMO AG participated in a
cooperation with the British Nottingham Trent University.
As part of their studies, roughly 50 students from the real
estate department travelled to Vienna and Bratislava from
19 March to 23 March 2012. Among other things, the busy
programme involved viewings of properties owned by S IMMO,
including the Galvaniho IV office building, the Austria
Trend Hotel in Bratislava and the S IMMO head office in
Vienna. Another highlight was the visit to the construction
site of the Quartier Belvedere Central development project
near Vienna’s new central railway station. Additional items
on the agenda included lectures from Austrian real estate
experts and a meeting with students and representatives
from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS
Austria.

One week earlier, Friedrich Wachernig, member of S IMMO’s
Management Board, provided students with personal insight
into his everyday work life and his professional history.
At the invitation of the Real Estate Management department
of the University of Applied Sciences Wiener Neustadt, he
held a question and answer session for students at the
first event in the series «Real Estate Personalities Up
Close and Personal». The goal of this series is to show
young students and other interested people possible
professions and career options in a simple, direct way, to
engage in discussions with them and to answer their
questions.

«For us, is about more than just developing our own young
talents at S IMMO. We are pleased to provide young students
in the field of real estate an opportunity to gain insight
into the operations of a listed real estate investment
company and to highlight various career paths in the
process. I hope that I was able to give them some positive
stimulus for their careers», said Friedrich Wachernig.

DJ PRESSEMITTEILUNG/DDP DIRECT GO Jugendreisen macht VOYAGE Beine

Notwendige Investitionen dank Umsatzrekorden

A Rosie Future: Jetsons-Like Gadgets with «Ambient Intelligence» Are …

artificial intelligence, robot, sensor, city, network

Fifty years after The Jetsons promised us a future of robot maids, flying cars, video phones and meals at the push of a button, it seems that reality may actually surpass this futuristic vision. By 2062, the year the animated show was set, advances in artificial intelligence, sensor networks and robotics promise to make the Jetsons’s home in Skypad Apartments, and indeed in all of Orbit City, seem quaint by comparison (although flying cars may remain out of reach—especially ones that beat parking problems by folding into a suitcase.

Many of today’s homes in the developed world already include a lot of the sensors and networking devices needed to make the smart home a reality, wrote Diane Cook, a professor in Washington State University’s School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, in the March 30 issue of the journal Science. The home of the future will harness information from appliances, computers, smart phones and other devices to intuitively meet the needs of its residents. Computer software will play the role of an intelligent agent by perceiving the state of a home’s physical environment and residents via sensors, interpreting this information using artificial intelligence, and automatically adjusting heating or cooling, lighting or other resources based on that information.

Cook refers to artificial intelligence and data-mining technologies’ ability to seek useful information on resident behavior and the state of the home, and to automatically act on this information, as «ambient intelligence. » It will foremost be used to monitor the health of a smart home’s inhabitants and to maximize energy efficiency as well as facilitate communication both within the household and with the outside world.

For the past year Cook and her colleagues have been studying the potential of smart-home technology to enable residents at the Horizon House retirement community in Seattle to extend the time they are able to live independently. A year ago the researchers installed dozens of sensors in some residents’ apartments to monitor motion, energy use and other conditions. Whereas half of the study participants have mild cognitive problems, the rest are healthy.

The researchers are using data collected to test the activity-recognition algorithms used by their software. «Our clinical psychology collaborators visit the residents every six months to perform a complete cognitive and physical health battery of tests,» Cook says. «We are currently designing techniques to identify correlations between behavioral changes and cognitive and physical health changes. » She expects to report on initial findings as early as this summer.

Increasingly, smart homes will exist within smart cities that likewise connect citizens via ambient intelligence. Such cities will integrate data from a variety of different sensors placed to record information about factors important to daily life—including air quality, traffic and weather—and then initiate some action if needed. Examples would be adjusting the timing of traffic signals to improve traffic flow or texting alerts to city dwellers warning them to stay indoors due to poor air quality.

Of course for a smart city to work, diverse data sources must be mined in a way that respects the privacy of its citizens. University College Dublin researchers Michael O’Grady and Gregory O’Hare raise the issue of «ambient law» in a related Science article on the emergence of smart cities. «To harness ambient intelligence, users must be prepared to share some knowledge about themselves—and this brings risks,» O’Grady says. «Once a technology begins to leave the lab, it is essential that legal, privacy and ethical issues be considered. «

Ambient law takes into account that the freedoms protected by a constitutional democracy may be radically altered as ambient intelligence permeates everyday life, O’Grady and O’Hare argue in their article. To avoid the loss of privacy and other freedoms, the legal community must work with computer scientists to establish rules that must be coded into ambient technologies before they become intrusive or damaging to individuals’ privacy.

Now, if researchers could only find a way to make George Jetson’s nine-hour workweek part of our future, too.

Smart key problems

Thursday, March 29, 2012 – 6:23pm

If you drive a fairly late model vehicle, you probably love your smart key.
Call it electronic overkill.
Originally that little black key fob in your pocket made it easier to lock and unlock the car.
Now, it does a lot more, and some safety experts are worried.
Every week when I get a new car to road test for KETK, I see just a little more technology. Some of it is good, like anti-lock brakes and stability control.
And some of it is nonsense, like paddle-shifters or rain sensing windwhield wipers.
But the humble key fob has really evolved.
Oh, is still locks and unlocks the door, opens the trunk, it even, can start your car remotely.
The one thing you don't have to do anymore is actually turn the key.
Sean Kane is president of Safety Research Strategies.
"You had very specific procedures that were required for you to remove a key from a car," he says. "That included locking the car in the park gear, turning the ignition key to the off position, before removing the key. Today with a smart key or key fob, you can exit the car without doing any of those things."
And with engines quieter than ever, you may not realize the engine is running. That has led to more thefts, so-called rollaways where a car is left out of gear, and even deaths by carbon monoxide because people don't realize the engine is running in the garage.
Some aftermarket remote starters installed on Toyotas have been a problem, because they might interfere with the cars electronics.
One of the problems that we're seeing is that smart keys aren't all that smart. And what we're seeing is a whole host of electronic inteference issues.
So why do we have smartkey in the first place? Were drivers overly fatigued actually turning the ignition key?
The reason is money.
Anytime an automaker can replace a mechanical device with an electronic device, their cost goes down.

Smart Grid Deployment Tracker 4Q11

NEW YORK, March 28, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Reportlinker.com announces that a new market research report is available in its catalogue:

Smart Grid Deployment Tracker 4Q11

http://www.reportlinker.com/p0804315/Smart-Grid-Deployment-Tracker-4Q11. html#utm_source=prnewswireutm_medium=prutm_campaign=Electrical_Equipment

Smart Meter and Smart Grid Projects, Meter Data Management, Communications Networks, and Smart Grid Systems Integrators: Project Tracking, Vendor Selection Share, and Unit Shipments

Smart meter and smart grid deployments continued at a moderate pace in 4Q 2011. Large ongoing projects in both China and North America helped fuel demand for meter shipments at steady volumes. For all of 2011, vendors shipped a large quantity of smart meters worldwide, totaling nearly 73 million, according to Pike Research’s Smart Grid Deployment Tracker. However, some sluggishness appeared in 4Q 2011 when overall smart meter shipments slipped nearly 8% from 3Q 2011, due in part to some projects winding down and fewer new big projects coming to market. According to Pike Research’s analysis, global smart meter shipments reached 17.8 million in 4Q 2011. As was the case in previous quarters of 2011, shipments in China accounted for the vast majority of global activity in 4Q 2011. Yet China’s market remains ambiguous since it is unclear how these new meters are actually configured and used in AMR and AMI systems.

During 4Q 2011, medium-sized and smaller utilities announced some new smart grid deployments. For example, in the United States, Lafayette Utilities System chose Elster as its vendor for a smart grid deployment to 66,000 of its customers. And in North Carolina, Wake Electric chose a Sensus AMI system for its 35,000 members who span a seven-county area surrounding the state’s capital city of Raleigh. But these are rather small volumes when compared to projects announced in previous quarters of 2011 when millions of endpoints were involved. Meanwhile in the United Kingdom, British Gas said it was halting further installations of smart meters until the government clarified its smart meter plans.

This Pike Research tracker report, updated quarterly, provides detailed analysis of worldwide utility smart grid and smart meter programs including tracking of customer endpoints, metering vendors, communications vendors, and systems integrators. The tracker includes a tactical examination of technologies, deployment timeframes, and vendor selections for each utility deployment, along with vendor market share analysis.

Key Questions Addressed:

-Which utilities are actively engaged in smart grid and smart meter deployments on a worldwide basis and what are their intended volumes and timeframes?

-Which technologies have various utilities selected for their deployment projects?

-Which meter manufacturers, communications module vendors, systems integrators, and meter data management providers are working with specific utilities?

-What are the market shares of these companies in terms of utility vendor selections in the United States?

Bombardier Named Systems Supplier of the Year at the Revista Ferroviaria …

High capacity BOMBARDIER INNOVIA Monorail 300 system and innovative BOMBARDIER CITYFLO 650 technology are winners in Sao Paulo

BERLIN, GERMANY–(Marketwire – March 30, 2012 – Bombardier Transportation, the world leader in rail transportation technology, has received the prestigious award for System Supplier of the Year at the 2012 Revista Ferroviaria Awards, held in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Jurandir Fernandes, Sao Paulo Secretary of State for Transport, presented the accolade to Bombardier Transportation Brazil executives Andre Guyvarch, President, Andre Richez, Head of Rail Control Solutions and Eduardo Saccaro, Director Systems.

Bombardier has won the award for its game changing INNOVIA Monorail 300 system, delivered with the CITYFLO 650 automatic train control solution. Cost effective to introduce without requiring major infrastructure or civil works, it offers transport capacity up to 48,000 passengers per hour per direction.

The 23rd annual Revista Ferroviaria Awards are acknowledged as the most prestigious annual prizes for individuals and companies operating in the railway sector in Brazil. The most high profile projects and developments of the year are selected by the editorial board of the Revista Ferroviaria magazine. These are then voted on by readers of the magazine and its online version.
