Bostic key to stop run game

Louisville running back Jeremy Wright vs. Florida linebacker Jon Bostic

The Cardinals lost top tailback Senorise Perry to an ACL injury late in the season and have turned to Wright, but Louisville has struggled to run the ball.

In his last three games, Wright has managed to gain only 89 yards on 48 carries and the Cardinals rank 100th in the nation in rushing offense.

Florida has one of the nation’s best run defenses and one of the biggest reasons is Bostic, who has blossomed in his senior year.

"Jon’s a very mature guy and has what we call in the coaching world very good football intelligence," said Florida defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. "He’s a smart guy, but not all smart guys are able to carry it over onto the grass and do that."

While the focus for Florida’s defense may be on Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, the Gators can’t let the Cardinals establish any hint of a running game and Bostic is the key.

Florida’s top five passing performances in bowl games:

1. 2010 Sugar Bowl — 482 yards by Tim Tebow. The Gators passed at will against Cincinnati as Tebow completed 31-of-35 passes in the easy win.

2. 1995 Sugar Bowl — 394 yards by Danny Wuerffel. Wuerffel had a big game, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Florida State.

3. 1992 Sugar Bowl — 370 yards by Shane Matthews. Florida was able to move the ball on Notre Dame, but the Gators settled for too many field goals.

4. 1966 Sugar Bowl — 352 yards by Steve Spurrier. Spurrier led a furious fourth-quarter comeback, but it fell short against Missouri.

5. 2003 Outback Bowl — 323 yards by Rex Grossman. Grossman played well but Florida lost to Michigan when UF’s final drive ended on a botched trick play.

1992 — Notre Dame 39, Florida 28.

The Gators were not only coming off their first official SEC title but a stirring win over FSU in the season finale. But the Gator defense was no match for Jerome Bettis in the second half.

The Gators led 16-7 at the half, but Notre Dame rallied in the third quarter to take a 17-16 lead. In the fourth quarter, the Irish scored 22 points and Florida had injury issues at linebacker.

Bettis scored all three touchdowns in the quarter, the last two on runs of 49 and 39 yards. "The Bus" finished the game with 150 rushing yards on only 16 carries.

Shane Matthews threw a pair of scoring passes and Arden Czyzewski kicked five field goals for UF in the game.

Key stat: Notre Dame won the game despite committing four turnovers, including three fumbles.

MVP: Bettis.

"We know it starts up front. I feel like with the O-line, we have the most strenuous practices, and it has to be that way. If we’re driving the machine, then the machine doesn’t go. And that’s how it’s been all season."

— Florida offensive guard James Wilson

(This will be the last game of the college careers of Florida’s seniors. Each day we’ll take a look at the career of one of those players.

Frankie Hammond Jr.

Hammond came to Florida as part of the 2008 recruiting class and redshirted his first year. In the next four years, he has 61 catches for 787 yards and six touchdowns.

He had only four catches as a redshirt freshman in 2009, but played on Florida’s kickoff team all year. The following year he had his best season in terms of catches with 22 and yards with 276.

As a senior, Hammond has 20 catches for 273 yards. That’s not a lot of catches, but he has caught at least one pass in all but one game this season.

Hammond has shown the ability to get open deep, but hasn’t been one of those receivers who makes guys miss. Still, he has had a solid career in his five years as a Gator.

Unlock your Hyundai with a tap of your smartphone by 2015

Hyundai Connectivity Concept

In the future, you’ll be able to unlock your Hyundai
car, start its engine, and more with little more than your NFC-enabled smartphone. Using the new Hyundai i30 (known here in the States as the Elantra GT as its Connectivity Concept test platform, Hyundai showed off a variety of wireless technologies that it hopes to implement as early as 2015.

According to Hyundai, «the Connectivity Concept allows the user to lock and unlock the car by placing their smartphone over an NFC-tag (near-field communication, negating the need for a traditional key fob.» Upon entering the vehicle, placing the phone in the center console allows the car to be started. Meanwhile, a wireless charging pad built into the console keeps the phone juiced while you drive. NFC was selected by the Car Tech editors as the «Most promising future tech» as part of our 2012 Car Tech Awards with this very implementation in mind.

Hyundai Connectivity Concept

The smartphone will also enable the car’s starter, unlock the driver’s profile, power the MirrorLink infotainment system, and charge wirelessly from its place in the console.

However, as promising as this sounds, NFC only has a maximum effective range of about 4 inches. (In practice, I’ve found the range is usually much shorter, requiring practically direct contact. This means that you’ll have to take your phone out of your pocket to use it. The smart key fobs already widely used in keyless entry and start systems have a much wider operating range and don’t require that you remove the fob from your pocket to unlock and start the car. So, while you gain the ability to combine two devices to save space in your pocket, you’ll lose the hands-free convenience of current smart keyless entry. Unless you’re the sort of person who always has your phone in-hand and at-the-ready, you’ll be trading one minor inconvenience for another. These are truly first-world problems, right?

However, Hyundai didn’t stop at replacing your keys with your smartphone and has added other useful features to the Connectivity Concept’s mix. For those households with multiple drivers, the smartphone will also be the key to your unique driver profile, storing data such as music, phone contacts, radio station preferences, and other profile settings that can be accessed and fine-tuned with the i30′s touch-screen interface. In a more well-equipped vehicle (perhaps a future Genesis or Equus? , data such as your automatic climate control settings, the power-adjustable seat position, and exterior mirror settings could be also be stored as part of a driver profile on your phone.

The final piece of the Connectivity Concept’s puzzle is the implementation of MirrorLink technology. This smartphone connectivity protocol will allow users to take advantage of car-centric apps already present on the paired smartphone to bring, for example, your favorite navigation and data-streaming apps to the touch screen on the dashboard where they can be more safely and legally used.

It is realistic that the features touted by the Connectivity Concept could be implemented by the 2015 estimate made by Hyundai. My guess is that MirrorLink, wireless charging, and some form of the phone-based driver profiles will definitely make an appearance in the next generation of Hyundai cars. NFC for Bluetooth pairing may also make an appearance, but using the short-range wireless tech for vehicle entry and start doesn’t really appear to offer much benefit over the currently used smart key fob technology.

What do you think? Would you replace your car keys with your smartphone?

Business hotel introduces world’s first smart hotel key

This is one hotel key you don't want to lose.

A new business hotel in Seoul has started using smartphones for hotel keys that also allow guests to surf the Internet and control room lights, television and temperature.

Hotel Skypark Central in Seoul's financial district launched the smart-key service on December 26, changing the locks and room controls in 16 of its rooms.

Guests pick up the smartphone when they check in at the front desk.

Smart buildings

"We wanted to do more technological advancement with smart buildings, so working with a hotel was a new initiative for us," said Dong-hui Lim, public relations representative for LG CNS, the IT service provider that developed the technology.

"It's convenient for guests, as they can control the room from outside the hotel, as well. For example, in winter, they'd be able to have the room heated before they came back to the hotel. "

Although a number of hotels around the world have placed tablets in rooms with similar capabilities for controlling room features, LG CNS and Hotel Skypark Central say this is the first time this particular technology has been used in a hotel anywhere in the world.

New tech

Dubbed Near-Field Communication (NFC, the new technology also allows hotels to monitor the environment of all rooms via a single management screen.

"We plan on implementing the service at two more hotels that we are planning on opening," said Hotel Skypark Central marketing representative Woo Hye-yeon.

"We had a brief testing period before we officially launched the service, and the users liked it a lot. They found it very useful."

Actual phone services aren’t enabled on the smartphone keys, but Wi-Fi is provided by the hotel at no extra charge.

Asked if guests would be worried about losing the smartphone key (the hotel won’t say what it will charge for a lost key, Lim said that may be the case for a short period, but added that in the future guests will be able to download an app on their own smartphones in order to use the service.

Drivers locked in to high key costs

It’s probably happened to everyone at some stage – that annoying experience of losing car keys. But the introduction of the «smart» key has turned the loss into a costly, rather than just frustrating, exercise with car dealers being accused of extreme price-gouging on replacement keys.

Videographer Marcus Wild discovered that first-hand when he recently went to a Wellington Volvo dealership to get a spare key for his 5-year-old S40 model car.

He was quoted $645 to replace the two-button plastic fob, including programming the new one to his car – that’s about the same as walking into an electronics retailer and buying a 32-inch Samsung television off the shelf.

It’s a far cry from the metal-only keys last seen on car models from the 1990s, which cost as little as $10 and a trip to your local locksmith to replace.

The motor industry says the high prices are a response to pressure from insurers to step up anti-theft security measures.

The new keys contain a transponder which is uniquely coded using specialist equipment, and any replacement key needs to be checked off against chassis and registration numbers.

«The multi-function device and the comprehensive security it provides is relative to its cost,» said Stephen Kenchington, general manager at SVD NZ, which holds the Volvo franchise in New Zealand.

Volvo is not alone in its smart key pricing – a survey across major car manufacturers shows replacement costs start at around $400 for some Korean brands, quickly climbing for Japanese brands before topping out near the $800 level for luxury European vehicles such as Mercedes.

That defence of the high prices holds no water with Clive Matthew-Wilson, editor of the Dog Lemon car review website, who labelled the practice as «an absolute price gouge» by dealers who’ve locked customers into a brand value chain.

He estimates it costs car manufacturers between $1.50 and $2.50 to produce a smart key, giving them a crude markup of 25,000 per cent in the Volvo example.

«There is a certain amount of admin involved in handling 10 million vehicles with 10 million keys and no-one would mind paying $50, but there is no credible scientific reason for keys to cost so much,» Matthew-Wilson said.

The smart key has also changed the way locksmiths operate, according to Matthew Langenkamp, who runs autokey.co.nz.

The site charges about $150 for a full replacement smart key on some Japanese models, but these still need to be coded to the vehicle, which can be done only at the dealer for between $120 and $200.

He said introduction of the devices has meant locksmiths have had to invest in specialist electronic servicing equipment costing between $80,000 and $120,000. And these often run on token systems, meaning locksmiths can replace only so many keys before they have to go back to the manufacturer to buy top-ups.

«The dealers, their business model is: Let’s charge people as much as possible for replacement parts so we can make as much money as possible,» Langenkamp said.

Both Matthew-Wilson and Langenkamp say car owners can try limiting costs by shopping around at locksmiths and online, but the digital sync of the smart key to your vehicle still needs to be done by the dealer.

Wild has since sourced a key for his Volvo from a genuine parts supplier in Chicago for US$120 ($156 including shipping, and has been quoted $120 by Armstrong Prestige in Wellington to complete the coding.

Vernon Brown, service manager at Armstrong Prestige, said the dealer will install parts that customers have sourced themselves – provided they are genuine, and added that «when we order a part it’s from a catalogue, and we don’t have much power over the price».

Although online is a cheaper option, Matthew-Wilson said car owners would start to see real traction on smart-key pricing only if they started making their displeasure with the manufacturer widely known.

«These days, these things can go viral, and if named and shamed enough, car companies will change their behaviour,» he said.

The smart key was just one example of auto-industry price gouging. Another was airbags where replacement costs sometimes ran so high it was cheaper to write off the car from a simple bash of the bumper than it was to repair it.

Best high-end luxury and performance cars of 2012

Rolls-Royce Phantom 2013

If you absolutely need to travel in the utmost comfort or at the fastest speeds, or even if you just want to impress your friends, these are the best high-end performance/luxury cars your seemingly endless piles of money can buy.

There are times when "best in class" just isn't good enough, and you need something that will simply leave everything else in its wake. The cars here are built with no compromises and to the exacting standards of the wealthy elite who buy them. They set the bar for luxury and/or performance, and with small production numbers, virtually guarantee exclusivity. Some are so rare, you'll likely never be lucky enough to see one on the road.

Rolls-Royce Phantom

When money is no object and you've hired someone to do your driving for you, there is really only one way to go. The Rolls-Royce Phantom is the reigning king of luxury cars. Built with an English attitude towards luxury and a German attention to detail, there is nothing that competes with the Phantom. The Mercedes Maybach certainly tried, but they ultimately failed, and the car has been discontinued. The Maybach was just never as regal as the Rolls, and when Bentley recently came out with a new big sedan, they wisely built it as more of a driver's car than a chauffer's. Rolls-Royce also has one of the most prestigious names in the luxury auto industry, one that not even Bentley can quite compete with. For those who need that extra bit of status, which comes only with exclusivity, Rolls has built a number of special editions over years, usually with production runs between 20 and 100, but sometimes as low as two units. There is plenty of space in the back, but those that demand an extra bit of legroom can always opt for the extended wheelbase model. There is simply no more comfortable or refined car in the world. Prices start at $401,000 but can obviously go much higher.

Bugatti Veyron Bernar Venet

Actually, you can't have this one. The Bernar Venet Veyron is a special edition of just one vehicle. It was commissioned from Bugatti, who in turn had the artwork done by artist Bernar Venet. It is a literal rolling work of art and is as exclusive as it gets. So why am I bothering to tell you about a car you can't have? Well, this is not the only one-off that Bugatti has built. Bugatti began building one-off special editions for clients with astronomical amounts of money back in 2007 with the Pegaso; a car built for a wealthy Ukrainian living in Dubai and named after a now-defunct Spanish luxury coachbuilder. There have since been several more of these, such as the exquisitely beautiful 2011 L'Or Blanc, which is decorated with a blue and white exterior made of porcelain. Since these cars are all based on the Veyron, they are all powered by a 1,001-horsepower quad-turbo W16 engine, an engine type built only by Bugatti. There is always plenty of customization available to wealthy customers of expensive cars, but to commission your own special edition right from the manufacturer is the absolute last word in exclusivity and automotive status. Prices are not disclosed, but it's safe to assume that if you need to ask… Expect it to be well over $2 million.

Bentley Mulsanne

To the untrained eye, there isn't much difference between the Mulsanne and the Rolls-Royce Phantom. Both are big, British sedans developed with money from their German parent companies. But there is a key difference between the two sedans located right in the name of the Bentley. The Mulsanne is named for a section of the La Sarthe racetrack at Le Mans, where Bentley has won six overall victories in the annual 24-hour endurance race. Rolls-Royce does not name their cars after racetracks. Bentley makes cars, even great big cars, which are meant to be driven. The Mulsanne handles in ways you never would have thought possible, and the back seat, though pleasant, just isn't the same as that of the Phantom. Under the hood, which seemingly goes on for days, is a 6¾-liter twin-turbo V8 which produces 505 horsepower and a staggering 752lb-ft of torque. It is a surprisingly quick car, for being roughly the same size as a small house, and absolutely everything in the interior is crafted with maniacal attention to detail. The Bentley is also cheaper than the Rolls, although it still isn't exactly a car for bargain hunters, coming it at just under $300,000.

Pagani Huayra

Sure, you can buy a Lamborghini if you want. But the price, exclusivity and sheer exoticism of the Pagani Huayra so far exceed that of the Aventador that they're not even really in the same league. The irony of this is that Horacio Pagani got his start at Lamborghini. Coming from Argentina to Italy at the age of 20 with a letter of recommendation from the legendary F1 World Champion Juan Miguel Fangio, Pagani did amazing work with Lamborghini before leaving to create his own company and build cars with absolutely no compromises. And the Huayra is certainly a car without compromise. Much of the styling is inspired by jet fighters, but it doesn't end there. The car is covered in flaps and ducts, and the active aerodynamics not only look cool, but also help with handling. The engine is a 6. 0-liter twin-turbo V12 built especially for this car by AMG, the performance division of Mercedes-Benz. It produces 720 horsepower and sounds something like what Joshua's trumpets must have sounded like at Jericho. The $1.2 million price tag is about triple that of an Aventador. So enjoy that Lamborghini, peasant.

Ferrari F12berlinetta

For the last car on the list, I thought it would be good to go for a mix of performance and luxury. There are plenty of great gran turismos out there, but Ferrari is a company built on V12 touring cars, and the F12berlinetta is their latest and greatest. The 6.3-liter engine produces 730 horsepower, and that makes this the most powerful street-legal car Ferrari as ever produced. But the F12berlinetta was also designed to have more luggage space than the 599 which it replaces. This is something we often forget when talking about Ferrari's touring cars, that their real purpose isn't to rack up quick lap times on a track, but rather to take road trips in comfort and luxury. Of course, the ability to get to your destination quickly is also a luxury, so the F12berlinetta offers one of the best touring experiences money can buy. It's true that Bentley has an excellent GT car in the Continental, but this has nothing of the Ferrari's exclusivity about it, and has a bit of a new money image associated with it. Prices begin at about $330,000. Floor mats will cost you extra…seriously.

Florida has one of the nation's best run defenses and one of the biggest reasons is Bostic, who has blossomed in his senior year.

"Jon’s a very mature guy and has what we call in the coaching world very good football intelligence," said Florida defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. "He’s a smart guy, but not all smart guys are able to carry it over onto the grass and do that."

While the focus for Florida's defense may be on Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, the Gators can't let the Cardinals establish any hint of a running game and Bostic is the key.

Florida's top five passing performances in bowl games:

1. 2010 Sugar Bowl — 482 yards by Tim Tebow. The Gators passed at will against Cincinnati as Tebow completed 31-of-35 passes in the easy win.

2. 1995 Sugar Bowl — 394 yards by Danny Wuerffel. Wuerffel had a big game, but it wasn't enough to overcome Florida State.

3. 1992 Sugar Bowl — 370 yards by Shane Matthews.

Grossman played well but Florida lost to Michigan when UF's final drive ended on a botched trick play.

If we're driving the machine, then the machine doesn't go. And that's how it's been all season."

— Florida offensive guard James Wilson

(This will be the last game of the college careers of Florida's seniors. Each day we'll take a look at the career of one of those players.

Frankie Hammond Jr.

Hammond came to Florida as part of the 2008 recruiting class and redshirted his first year. In the next four years, he has 61 catches for 787 yards and six touchdowns.

He had only four catches as a redshirt freshman in 2009, but played on Florida's kickoff team all year. The following year he had his best season in terms of catches with 22 and yards with 276.

As a senior, Hammond has 20 catches for 273 yards. That's not a lot of catches, but he has caught at least one pass in all but one game this season.

Hammond has shown the ability to get open deep, but hasn't been one of those receivers who makes guys miss.

EIS needed for transit-oriented development in Kakaako

The Hawaii Community Development Authority said Wednesday that an Environmental Impact Statement is required for the Transit-Oriented Development projects for the Kakaako Community Development District.

The planned projects will involve substantial secondary impacts, such as population changes or effects on public facilities, the state agency said.

It also may substantially affect scenic vistas and view-planes and may require substantial energy consumption, the agency said as reasons for triggering an EIS.

The HCDA said that the entire district is a mature urban environment and does not include any environmentally sensitive natural resources, although due to its extensive history it is likely that burials may be encountered during development of properties within the district.

In addition to the potential development of TOD projects, other anticipated development within the district includes an affordable rental project at 690 Pohukaina Street, which is to be developed by Forest City Hawaii, the renovation of Ward Warehouse commercial areas and the implementation of master plans by major landowners in the area, including Kamehameha Schools and the Howard Hughes Corp.

Road safety improvements, EIS announced for Missing Link

Road safety improvements, EIS announced for Missing Link

Another day, another episode in the Missing Link saga.

Yesterday, Mayor Mike McGinn held a press conference with City Councilman Tom Rasmussen and Seattle Department of Transportation officials to announce upcoming road safety improvements for streets and intersections in Ballard.

As you already know from when we last updated on the Missing Link, $300,000 has been allocated for the 2013-14 budget to move ahead on a full Environmental Impact Statement of the Missing Link corridor, a gap in the Burke-Gilman trail stretching from the Ballard Fred Meyer to the Ballard Locks. In 2008, a limited environmental review was conducted and determined the proposed Missing Link route, which would go along Shilshole Ave NW, would have a non-significant impact.

However, businesses in the area, including Ballard Oil and Salmon Bay Gravel Co. , have worked to impede the Missing Link, citing safety concerns and freight traffic that moves through Shilshole Ave NW. Representatives of the businesses have previously stated to the Ballard News-Tribune that they would like another route considered.

Siding with the business appellants earlier this year — which include Ballard Oil and Salmon Bay Gravel Co. — reversed the SEPA Determination of Non-Significance, effectively ordering SDOT to re-review the Missing Link before moving forward.

According to the Mayor’s Office, city records show there were 45 bicycle crashes that were responded to on NW 45th St between 11th Ave NW and Shilshole Avenue NW in a four year period, from 2008 to 2011. The area, part of the Missing Link, is the highest bicycle collision location in the city.

So, while the EIS is conducted and until the solution to the Missing Link is figured out, the Mayor announced a number of safety improvements that will take place in the meantime, to be built in 2013 or 2014. Improvements include:

• Advisory bicycle lanes on NW 45th Street and other safety improvements on that section of roadway

• Installation of striping and signage to create a traffic island and a 4-way stop at Ballard Avenue NW and 17th Avenue NW

• Striping and signage at NW 48th Street and Ballard Avenue NW to improve vehicular line of sight and slow speeds.

• Shoulder maintenance and replacement along degraded sections of the shoulder along Shilshole Avenue NW.

• Installation of a curb ramp to allow bicycles access to the sidewalk to queue for the existing bike lane headed north on 24th Avenue NW at the intersection of Shilshole Avenue NW / 24th Avenue NW and NW Market Street. Current conditions provide very limited queuing space for bicycles.

Plan to expand Dakotas-based bomber training airspace awaits final EIS

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – A plan to more than triple the airspace in which the U.S. Air Force can conduct training exercises with its Dakotas-based B-1 and B-52 bombers is still awaiting a final environmental impact statement.

The six-year effort to expand the airspace is a complex process that involves working with the Federal Aviation Administration, the region's Native American tribes and the public through a detailed environmental review.

A draft environmental impact statement was released in August 2010, and public hearings were held in the Dakotas, Wyoming and Montana later that year to solicit public comments.

Officials earlier had expected the statement to released last winter.

Air Force spokesman Maj. Matthew Reese says it's still being finalized, and it's currently out of the hands of Ellsworth Air Force Base.
