Tower Holdings hopes to put a marina at Putney Beach on Great Keppel Island.
COUNCILLORS recently learnt the Great Keppel Island revitalisation plan wasn’t all about sun, sand and surf.
Representatives from the Rockhampton firm behind the plan’s environmental impact statement, CQG Consulting, spoke with Rockhampton region councillors at a meeting last week.
CQG Consulting director Patrice Brown and senior town planner Brittany Lauga explained the intricacies of the EIS to councillors.
A team of 90 people from various businesses took two years to complete the huge document.
Ms Brown said there had been a lot of valuable research already done by James Cook University and government agencies.
She said that while the resort might have been a developer’s dream in another country, there were many hoops to jump through with it being built in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area.
Ms Brown and Ms Lauga addressed concerns raised by councillors, such as dredging at Putney Beach for the resort’s planned marina.
«A considerable amount of time and effort has gone into designing the marina,» Ms Brown said.
Ms Brown watered down worries dredging would cause the environment harm, saying there was only a small amount required.
Ms Lauga said growing up in the Rockhampton region meant the project was very important to her.
She said CQG Consulting had conducted numerous focus groups, with 600 people being consulted, along with stakeholder meetings and a Newspoll survey.
She said more than 80% of people who participated in the survey were in favour of the development.
Cr Strelow expressed her support for the plan, saying she believed now was the time for leadership and boldness from the council.
