More comment sought on Hancock’s Kevin’s Corner mine

PERTH (miningweekly.com – The Queensland government is seeking more comment on the environmental investigation into the proposed $4.2-billion Kevin's Corner coal project, being developed by Hancock Galilee.

Queensland Deputy Premier and State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Minister Jeff Seeney said interested parties had four weeks to comment on supplementary information to the environmental impact statement (EIS, which Coordinator-General Barry Broe would release.

The supplementary information addressed issues raised in the 22 submissions received during the public consultation on the EIS.

"Some of the key issues raised in the submissions included the impact of subsidence from underground mining, impacts to flora and fauna, and cumulative impacts to groundwater and surface water," Broe said.

Seeney noted that the Kevin's Corner project had the potential to deliver thousands of jobs in the Galilee basin including 1 800 jobs during construction and 1 600 once operational.

"Add to that, the sheer size and long lifetime of this project means jobs created during production and the overall effect on the state's economy will be felt for decades to come."

He added that while coal market conditions have declined during the last 12 months, it remained important to facilitate an efficient and rigorous environmental assessment process so that projects could be ready for an investment decision as soon as possible.

The Kevin's Corner project would produce an estimated 30-million tons of thermal coal a year, over a 30-year life of mine. The underground and opencut operation would be located 65 km north-west of the proposed Alpha coal mine, which Hancock and India's GVK are developing.

"The project would use the rail and port facilities proposed as part of the Alpha coal project, with the Alpha mine to be situated immediately to the south of the Kevin's Corner site," Seeney said.

The Alpha project would include a railway line between the mine and the Abbot Point port.

The Kevin's Corner project supplementary information on the EIS will be available for public comment from November 5 until December 3.
