Overwhelmingly negative comments from Big Island residents were "inadvertently omitted" from a recently published statement Kahuku Village Project environmental impact.
"It was a mistake," said Dean Minakami planner PBR Hawaii, adding that the comments and responses to those comments were not included in the electronic document and sent to the State Office of Environmental Quality Control.
Office twice monthly, the notice of the Environment, said he distributed copies throughout the state include the comments and response.
The error gives other Big Island residents 45 days to comment on the Ka'u development project, after the document was reissued on Friday Kahuku Village Project environmental impact statement. The original electronic version is distributed via CD to interested parties and government agencies and was available on the website OEQC, according to Friday's edition of the Notice of the Environment. The reissue prompted a second period of 45 days of comments, which now runs through November 6.
The project manager Aaron Eberhardt did not return a message seeking comment Monday.
The missing letters were written in late 2009, after Kahuku Aina Nani and his adviser, PBR Hawaii, issued an environmental impact statement preparation notice for the project, located in approximately 2,000 acres within a parcel of 16.000 acres . The first draft was published on 8 August with comments due last week.
Letters Ka'u residents were overwhelmingly negative. A letter-writing campaign generated half dozen letters outlining concerns about the proposed development.
"This is a pristine and unspoilt coastline … conservation district because of its natural landscape and the raw and wild for the protection of nesting areas for the hawksbill turtle and home to some of the most valuable, irreplaceable archaeological sites and home to more than 1,500 years ago, "the letter said. "Take your plans for urban areas and leave Ka'u wild, rugged, pristine and beautiful and preserve this area for us and our future generations. "
PBR responses to the concerns, written in June, said the project was "significantly reduced" since the 2009 proposal was issued.
