Draft EIS / EIR according Klamath free, open public comment period

A Draft Environmental Impact Statement / Environmental Impact Report for the Klamath Hydroelectric Settlement Agreement was launched on September 21 and process 60-day public comment period is open until November 21, 2011.

The document is available for consultation at www.KlamathRestoration.gov, along with a calendar of upcoming public hearings and instructions for submitting comments in writing. Printed copies are available for inspection at various public libraries and at the federal and state offices of the agency of natural resources within and near the Klamath Basin.

The document was prepared by the Department of Interior through the Bureau of Reclamation, and the Department of Fish and Game.

The Draft EIS / EIR, according to a Department of the Interior press release, identifies the effects of the proposed action – the removal of four Klamath River dams and hydroelectric application Agreement Klamath Basin Restoration. It also identifies other alternatives, including options to get out of all the dams in place and the options for getting out of two dams in place.

The KHSA was negotiated between the state leaders, local, tribal and supplier of water and announced in February 2010.

U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar also announced last week that the federal government has completed scientific journals and technical studies on the environmental and economic impacts of removing dams.

Under the terms of the KHSA, Salazar will make a final decision on dam removal on the basis of a review of scientific and technical data and information in the environmental analysis, including public opinion.

The final EIS / EIR will include an addition of all comments received from the public when published. The final decision by the Secretary is expected in March 2012, according to the press release. If the Secretary chooses to remove the dams, the governors of Oregon and California have 60 days to attend.
