"Smart" Car Key uses NFC technology to unlock new applications

Dutch company NXP has launched a car key that enhances the functionality through the use of NFC (Near Field Communications technology. KeyLink Lite can connect to other NFC-compatible devices such as mobile phones, tablets and laptops This opens a range of possible uses. NXP has identified five applications for its "smart" key:

  • Car Finder – Records of the keys to your GPS coordinates of where you parked your car, so if you forget you can transfer data to your mobile phone and opening Google Maps to locate it.
  • Route Planner – Plan your route at home on a computer, transfer the data to the key and then upload it to your navigation system in the car.
  • State Car and data management services – Find out how much fuel is left simply approaching the car key in your mobile phone. The data service can be saved directly to your KeyLink Lite.
  • Car Auto Diagnosis – diagnostic data transfer over the car key to a computer, upload to a web site service and diagnostic analysis.
  • The car customization – Manufacturers can pre-fit cars with additional features and optional enhancements that can be unlocked after pressing the button.
