Smart expands LTE platform to key cities on rising demand

MANILA, Philippines – Smart Communications, Inc. has announced it is expanding its 4G (fourth generation network coverage, which runs on an LTE technology platform, to more locations in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, where tests are ongoing in Davao City.

Introduced last April in Boracay and its public demo in Metro Manila held last May, Smart's LTE coverage now spans Metro Manila and Cebu City.

Actual speed tests indicate that the LTE, which stands for Long Term Evolution, can reach download speeds of up to 50 to 70 megabits per second, earning it the tag of the fastest 4G technology in the country today.

Smart Technology Group Head Rolando G. Peña reported, "We are upgrading our network as we speak and soon, our subscribers will be able to enjoy the breakneck speeds that LTE promises."

Smart–which registered 46.6 million subscribers on its GSM network as of end-March–and parent company the Philippine Long Distance Co. (PLDT have set aside P67 billion to modernize its network.

Recently, PLDT chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan PLDT will report a "better" second quarter performance compared to the same period last year. The company's financial performance report is expected on August 2.

LTE uptake is projected in a recent study by market research and analysis firm In-Stat to grow 3,400 percent within the next four years amid a surge in public demand for smart devices and high-speed services.

That outlook is boosted by data from the General Services Administration (GSA which recorded a 40-percent rise in the number of LTE-enabled gadgets in the United States from March to June 2011.

This comes as Smart reported it is improving the coverage of its Evolved High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA+ service, an upgrade of its standard High Speed Packet Access (HSPA technology for faster 3G download speeds.

Such HSPA+ technology, said Smart officials, is available in major urban centers including Iloilo City in Visayas and Zamboanga City in Mindanao. Smart will bring in HSPA+ devices this July.
