Audi A7 Sportback 3.0 TDI
From $142,750 plus on-road and dealer costs. 3.0-litre turbo diesel V6; 180kW/500Nm; 7-sp dual-clutch auto; 6.0L/100km and 158g/km CO2; AWD
Value
Highlights include a powered tailgate, xenon headlights, smart-key access, electric park brake, clever handwriting recognition to input destination and an auto rear spoiler. Safety includes Pre-Sense crash anticipation, six airbags, stability control, reversing camera and Quattro all-wheel-drive.
Inside
Colour screen dominates classy, albeit derivative, Audi dash. Jaguar XJ-style wraparound dash panel helps to distinguish A7 from lesser siblings. Rear-seat space is borderline acceptable for 180-centimetre-tall adults. Big (but shallow hatch-style boot and folding rear seats provide versatility.
Engine
Good lag-free power delivery for easy overtaking. Gearbox shifts seamlessly at speed but can be jerky at low speed and hesitates on take-off. Engine auto stop-start can exacerbate this if driven accordingly. Averaged 7.0 litres per 100 kilometres with plenty of freeway cruising.
How it drives
Lacks steering feel but $4770 air suspension provides a choice ranging from a firmer sports setting to a comfort mode to become a straight-line mile-eater. Not as accomplished all-round as the CLS.
Styling
Not as streamlined or cohesive as conceptually similar A5 Sportback. Kind of looks like something that lived before the dinosaurs. People might confuse it for the cheaper A5, too.
Verdict
Looks are everything in this image-conscious segment, and the mechanically competent A7 just isn’t as distinctive or as engaging to drive, either.
Mercedes-Benz CLS 350 CDI
From $159,200 plus on-road and dealer costs. 3.0-litre turbo diesel V6; 195kW/620Nm; 7-sp auto; 6. 2L/100km and 163g/km CO2; RWD
Value
A whopping $16,450 dearer but better equipped. Let down by foot-operated park brake and $1993 smart-key access. Matches Audi and adds full LED lights and TV tuner, to name a few. Safety includes Pre-Safe, 11 airbags, stability control and blind-spot and driver-fatigue systems.
Inside
Ambient mood lighting and high dash add drama and a cocoon sensation, differentiating from E-Class donor car. Multitude of front-seat adjustments. Comparable rear-seat, head and leg space but mid-seat partition impinges roominess. Boot lid limits storage for larger items.
Engine
Quiet with effortless mid-speed acceleration and no turbo lag. Smooth seven-speed automatic utilises V8-like torque. Advantage is negated by extra weight for a similar 0-100km/h time. Averaged 8.6L/100km over hilly terrain. Expect much lower in everyday conditions.
How it drives
Keener, flatter and sharper than the A7 and its E-Class donor car to suit its dynamic character. Ride cossets occupants with refinement and luxury, even with optional 19-inch alloys. Composed through tight, twisty sections despite heft. The driver’s choice.
Styling
Far more aggressive than old model with styling cues borrowed from SLS AMG «Gullwing» supercar among others within the range. Not as pure as its game-changing predecessor but still turns plenty of heads.
Verdict
Does not have the same initial jaw-dropping looks as the original, but its driving experience and all-round ability win this race.
