'Smart' PV inverter shipments expected to grow to 27GW by 2015, representing almost 60% of the market compared to only 20% in 2010, according to IMS Research. This is being driven by concerns about imbalances in the utility grid, the increasing share of photovoltaics connected to the network and the need for energy storage to take advantage of the rates of self-consumption and also incorporate PV in the "smart grid".
According to IMS Research, features such as reactive power, the interaction of smart grids and energy storage are the transformation of the investors in a power conversion unit in a single component of the network infrastructure and will change radically PV inverter market in the next five years.
IMS Research indicates that companies have been pushing investors to assist in stabilizing the network and meet the stringent technical requirements, especially in Europe. IMS Research also said despite the expectation that smart investors will account for 80% market share in EMEA in 2015, most shipments of investors will not be "fully smart" and only have a capacity of reactive power.
The research found that Germany is a leading integrator of photovoltaic energy to the network recently implemented policies Low and Medium Voltage, and other European countries are likely to follow suit. Because of this, investors expected standard a decrease of only 42% of global shipments for the year 2015 as the directives are fully implemented.
Another new trend identified in the report is the inclusion of variable energy storage and IMS Research forecasts that about 5% of all PV inverters shipped in 2015 will be equipped with storage batteries, to help power loads continuously throughout the day. However, for this to happen, these products will have to quickly reduce costs and improve efficiency and reliability before being widely accepted.
IMS Research also shows a very positive long term outlook for the industry of photovoltaic inverter with smart investors who form the majority in 2014 and located more mature markets in Europe provide most of the demand.
