Thwarting robberies home with these simple steps – Regina Leader

Summertime is in full swing, and with it comes holiday time. Canadians take advantage of these warm months of escape, whether to a cottage, camp, resort or even just a day at the beach.

But at the same time sunbathing, relaxing on the deck or fishing on the lake, our biggest investment – houses – sitting alone and unoccupied. Statistics compiled by Aviva Insurance indicate home burglaries up 20% in July and 31% in August, with the majority of home burglaries happening in the beginning of the weekend.

Follow these easy steps to ensure your home is safe and secure while you're away.

1. Use a lock on every door in the floor. A good lock comes with a safety rating of grade 1, the highest level of security available at home and deter wrench attacks, anti-lever shield feature and offer collection and knock resistance.

2. Use something like a Weiser SmartKey system. Do not hide spare keys in mats or in potted plants. Something hidden to be found. The Weiser SmartKey allows you to re-enter your locks yourself, which means you can leave an extra key with a neighbor or a service technician, then change the locks when you get home so the key no longer works.

3. Set timers on interior lights and home electronics. Lights are lit at nightfall the impression that someone is at home. A similar effect can be achieved by putting a stereo or television on a timer.

4. Invest in an alarm system that provides the perimeter and interior detection services.

5. Do not tell the world that your house is empty. This seems logical, but boasting Tweets or Facebook status updates about the upcoming holidays are all too common. It is not too difficult to use pictures or tips on these sites to figure where you live, leaving one of the would-be thieves know they have an easy target.
