(RTTNews – The U.S. State Department issued a Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS on the Keystone XL Pipeline Project in mid-August.
Once the State Department issues a final EIS, interested federal agencies like the Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency will have 90 days to submit their views on whether to issue a Presidential Permit would be in the national interest.
The State Department said that during the first 30 days of this review period of 90 days, plans to hold public meetings in the capitals of each of the six states through which the pipeline would pass, ie, Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas.
Another meeting will be held in the Sand Hills region of Nebraska and the Gulf coast near Port Arthur, Texas.
The State Department also plans to hold a final public meeting in Washington, DC, during this period. Which has already held over 20 public consultation meetings along the pipeline route.
These meetings give the public an opportunity to express their views on economic, energy security, environmental and safety issues, among other issues the public thinks should be taken into account in determining whether to grant or deny permission presidential would be in the national interest.
Keystone XL has faced demands from petroleum refineries and flask of environmentalists and some members of U.S. Congress.
The State Department plans to take a decision on whether to grant or deny the permit before the end of 2011, but said it would not make a decision until the review process is completed.
Keystone XL is a pipeline of 1,700 miles of US-Canadian border in Montana, by Cushing, Oklahoma, to refineries in the U.S. Gulf coast. The Department is conducting a thorough review process and objective of the request for a Presidential Permit for the pipeline crossing the Canada-US border.
