Morrell makes move Smart, VCU joins staff

Morrell Michael essentially would guarantee a coach Shaka Smart star crossed first in Clemson during the 2007-08 season, and now, Smart power is the glow-in-Morrell.

About three months removed from leading Virginia Commonwealth its first Final Four, the Smart 34 years old, has been hired as director of operations Morrell VCU basketball.

"Shaka called and offered me the job, and go with it – not long to accept that," said Morrell, a 1,000-point scorer at Elizabethtown College and Milligan. "He's a man I'm probably the closest to this profession."

Smart worked for Oliver Purnell at Dayton and Clemson, where he helped Morrell on board in 2007 as a teaching assistant.

"Oliver was a kind of Shaka allow the interviews," said Morrell.

A year later, Smart went to Florida and recommended a promotion for Morrell, who became the youngest full-time assistant in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

"It was very instrumental in helping me with my career," said Morrell. "Shaka was with Billy Donovan and Oliver (Purnell, and learning from him the opportunity to go back and kind of get under his wing once again – only got to work with him for a year at Clemson, but he built a pretty strong relationship with him. So I'm excited to go back to him in a place that is coming off a Final Four run. "

Morrell coached last season in South Charleston former East Tennessee State graduate assistant Barclay Radebaugh.

"Coach Radebaugh was great for me," said Morrell. "I learned a lot from him during my time there. It was excellent to work under. "

Morrell began his coaching career with two seasons at King College – one each with Pitts and George Scott Polsgrove. Morrell worked in a field of Clemson in 2007 and met through intelligent Will Wade, who left Clemson this year to join Tommy Amaker at Harvard and is now on the staff of Smart in the UCV.

Smart and Morrell are each small products of the school. Smart was a starter for four years at Kenyon College in Ohio, and still maintains a single season and career records for aid. Morrell played basketball and golf at NAIA member Milligan.

"It's good to see someone succeed that way – to do it the hard way," said Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten, who played with Morrell in Elizabethton and has remained close friends, not to mention an addict the rings. "He did not play a big-time college or anything, so I'm excited for him. It's a great opportunity to partner with Shaka Smart, one of the best youth coaches in the country … and I hope it takes advantage of it and have a good career ahead of him. "

Smart graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in history in 1999. Indeed, it seems appropriate that Morrell is moving from one historic city to another – Charleston, SC, Richmond, Virginia – and he also has a degree in history.

Unfortunately for Smart and Co., Final Four VCU team is history. The Rams must replace many key players.

"They lose three guys," Morrell said, "but we had a great recruiting class coming in … They still have the chance to be pretty good, going to be a little young.

"In this league, you obviously have to beat George Mason and Old Dominion.'s A strong league. "

Staff Smart was left with two vacancies in the spring, when Mike Jones took over as head coach at Radford and Kyle getter with him. VCU also announced the hiring of assistant Mary Jamion William Christian, a former aide to Henry Emory.

"We are very excited Jamion and Mike join our staff," Smart said in a statement from the school. "Both are very talented young coaches who come from a strong background of success."

It's been a busy offseason for Smart. North Carolina State rejected in favor of an eight-year extension at the UCV worth about $ 1.2 million a year.
