Livingston police officers are looking for help in solving a string of 14 burglaries that targeted several cars and SUVS in residential driveways and the Toys R Us parking lot over the past week.
According to the police, the burglars drove off with two cars – a black Volkswagen Jetta and a silver Mercedes C320 – and got away with several other valuable items, including wallets, drivers licenses, credit cards, cash, holiday presents, two Bluetooth headsets, two iPods, a GPS, DVD player and Nintendo DS.
Most of the burglaries are believed to have happened either overnight or in the early morning hours and the suspects usually enter vehicles that are unlocked or have a key, valet key or key fob in the car, Detective Sgt. Anthony Dippold said on Monday.
The first burglaries happened in the early morning hours of Dec. 22 in vehicles parked by homes on 34 North Baum Court, 14 Thames Drive, 30 and 37 Franklin Avenue, 25 Billingsley Drive and 21 Trinity Drive, according to police.
A 2010 black Volkswagen Jetta was stolen from a house on Glendale Avenue on Dec. 23, Dippold said. The car’s license plate is ZJG51X.
Dippold said three cars in the Toys R Us parking lot at the Livingston Mall were broken into between 10:30 and 11:30 p.m. on Friday as well, Dippold said. The cars belonged to an East Hanover woman, an East Orange woman and Newark man.
Thieves stole the wallet, license, registration and keys to a home alarm system from an East Hanover woman and a second car, a silver 2002 Mercedes C320, which was parked by the woman’s home, Dippold said. Dippold said the Livingston police notified the East Hanover police.
The East Orange woman lost new clothing purchased at the Livingston Mall, a wallet and credit cards, and the Newark man clothing, a bottle of cologne, a pocketbook, wallet and license to the thieves, Dippold said.
Another burglary happened to a car parked at Vere Terrace sometime between Dec. 19 to 25. Dippold said three bags of special shoes and a bag of podiatry supplies were taken.
Three other burglaries happened late Sunday or early Monday to vehicles parked by homes on North Ridge Road and Brandon Avenue.
Livingston and other nearby communities, such as Millburn and South Orange, had a similar string of burglaries over the summer, Dippold said.
Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Livingston police at (973 992-3000 and ask for the detective bureau. All tips will be kept confidential.
