FAA Final EIS preferred extension of the south runway at Green

WARWICK – The Federal Aviation Administration has final approval of a preliminary environmental track expansion controversy TF Green Airport.

On Monday, the agency issued its Final Environmental Impact Statement in favor of an extension of the main runway of 1,530 meters to the southwest.

The plan will require the purchase of nearby homes and the relocation of a portion of the strip and the airport road. It was the same scenario suggested by a draft environmental review published last year.

The last step in the process is that the federal government to formally approve the project.

Airport officials said they need a longer runway to accommodate larger aircraft that can be made directly between countries on TRIPS and keep the airport competitive and according to the FAA.

"The runway length limited TF Green Airport has prevented some companies to meet current and anticipated West Coast destinations," said the report of 632 pages. "Most importantly, however, several of the TF Green Airport facilities do not meet the FAA standard for airport design and safety criteria. "

But neighbors and the city complain that the expansion would disrupt neighborhoods and taxpayers have the properties of the tax rolls. The report acknowledges the longest runway will bring increased noise, but says that some homeowners will be qualified for the money for soundproofing.

The airport served 3.9 million passengers last year and recorded about 220 takeoffs or landings on an average day.
