Ends BOEMRE Supplemental Draft EIS for the Central Gulf of Mexico Lease Sale

Comment period which includes four public hearings

The Office of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Control (BOEMRE issued a statement in the Supplemental Draft Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS for the proposed oil and gas lease sale of 216/222 in the Central Area Planning in the Gulf Mexico. The draft SEIS updates the previously published results in various environmental studies covering the Gulf of Mexico and incorporates the latest information available after the Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill.

"The analysis in this SEIS project will enable us to make objective and scientifically based decisions on offshore exploration for energy, development and production," said Michael R. Chief BOEMRE Bromwich. "The public hearings on the SEIS project we are announcing today are the vehicles for a broad public input on the environmental effects of oil and gas operations in the Gulf of Mexico."

The Federal Register notice announcing the draft SEIS will be published on July 1, 2011, at which time BOEMRE begin accepting public comments here . Comments will be used to prepare the SEIS for submission of the sale of rights.

Lease Sales 216 and 222 are the last remaining sales scheduled for the Central Planning Area of ​​the Gulf in the 2007-2012 Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Leasing Program. Sales were delayed because of the tragedy Deepwater Horizon and combined to maximize efficiency.

BOEMRE held public hearings in three cities to give interested parties an opportunity to comment on the draft SEIS. Meetings are scheduled as follows:
