Republican presidential candidate Tim Pawlenty in Florida slipped to a low-profile series of events to raise some much needed money and make a pitch to the state's political elite.
Without warning or public events, eight state legislators wooed Pawlenty on Thursday at the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables and a dozen lawmakers on Wednesday at the Hyatt Regency in Tampa. He also met a handful of legislators and potential supporters in Orlando. Most voters will be on September 24 GOP poll of Florida.
Although the vote at the bottom of a crowded Republican field, Pawlenty chose high-profile events to focus on fundraising, organization and strategies.
"It's sort of buffet of political things," Pawlenty said of his visit to Florida, a must-win state for Republicans seeking the White House.
"We will not have the level of Bentley or a Mercedes funds as well as some other candidates," said Pawlenty. "But at least have a level of Buick to reach out in Phase 1, which is the first state, and do so at a competitive level. "
Lawmakers who spoke with The Miami Herald after the meeting Pawlenty gave good reviews, but said they were not willing to give guarantees because they wanted to meet all candidates.
Some wondered why Pawlenty, governor of Minnesota From 2003-2011, did nothing to increase his name identification by the publication of his trip to Florida.
"He has to do, obviously, a touch in the future, but if I could carry it out would be a great candidate for the presidency," said Republican state Rep. Eddy Gonzalez of Hialeah. "He's not a favorite. I'm sure it will not. He could be a possible president and hopefully a good idea. It is a decent man, honest. "
