Smart partnership key to successful redevt project

KUALA LUMPUR: Smart partnership that can give a win-win situation to the developer and the residents is the key that will ensure success of a project to redevelop a housing area in the country.

Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin said it was important for the developer to understand local issues and for the residents to understand the redevelopment project to be implemented in their areas to ensure that the project would run smoothly.

"The development of the four-storey flats in Kampung Kerinchi is the best example of this smart partnership where the residents' association and the developer, Suez Domain, work closely to ensure that the implementation of the project will run smoothly for the benefit of the residents.

"The project is also an example of a redevelopment project in the country which even the Penang government led by the DAP wants to emulate. They have even sent their representatives to learn the implementation methods for the project," he told reporters here  yesterday.

Earlier, Raja Nong Chik launched the show house for the flats, which will be known as Kerinchi Residensi upon completion of the redevelopment project, and attended the thanksgiving ceremony with the residents.

The Kerinchi Residensi will be developed at a cost of approximately RM600 million on the flats' 2.8-hectare site in Kampung Kerinchi. It will have 472 units of houses measuring 83.61sq metres and worth between RM350,000 and RM400,000 each.

Raja Nong Chik said the redevelopment project which began in March 2010 was expected to be completed by 2016.

Describing the project as something close to this heart, the minister said: "The project is something that the residents and I have worked on ever since the 1990s when I was still with Umno Youth. When we finally got the deal in 2010, the opposition started to make fuss by creating issues to influence the residents to reject the project.

"Finally, in April this year, the works to demolish the flats were implemented. Now the works to replace the flats with modern Kerinchi Residensi are ongoing and the residents need not to pay any cent," he said proudly. — Bernama
