According to car2go Business Development Manager Walter Rosenkranz, car2go is a car-sharing business that allows people to use cars on demand. Users pay by the minute and return cars by parking them and following instructions on a touch screen. Cars must be checked in and out within the specified area, but they can be driven outside of the region and are primarily used for short, one-way distances. The company uses smart cars with the car2go logo emblazoned on the side. Every vehicle takes an estimated 15 private residential cars off the road, so 350 cars could potentially eliminate up to 5,250 cars in the South Bay, according to the company.

Several council members approved a relationship with car2go as an alternative to public transportation and second residential vehicle, but said they would like to see hybrid or electric vehicles in the long-term plan and want to discuss the option of permanent car2go parking spaces in city lots.

Hermosa Beach is one of nine cities that needed to approve car2go in order for the company to move into the South Bay.

Jacki Bacharach, Executive Director of the South Bay Cities Council of Governments, said that COG supports the car2go program and is working closely with car2go on its presentations to city councils. She said that Gardena and Lawndale are both ready to approve permits and Lomita is ready to approve car2go contingent on Lawndale. The program has also been endorsed by the Torrance and Hawthorne Chambers of Commerce, although the cities of Torrance and Manhattan Beach asked for parking studies before they would engage in further discussions.

The car2go program is currently offered in nine cities throughout the United States including San Diego, Portland and Washington, D.C., in addition to nine European cities. Users may checkout cars in any city, so Rosenkranz said it is a convenient option for business travelers.

Credit card parking meters coming soon to Pier Avenue

The city council unanimously approved to have 150 credit card operated parking meters on Pier Avenue.

The parking meters will be purchased from Duncan Liberty. The city will return eight multi-space meters for a credit of $62,160 and pay an additional $8,139 for the new meters, which cost $499 each. The city will spend an additional $8.50 per meter per month for software and reporting. Finance Director Viki Copeland said that Duncan can exchange and install the new parking meters within one week and there is no installation charge.

People who do not use a credit card are able to use a smart key or a smart card, which are paid for in the city offices, but further discussion is necessary to determine the process and method that will be used.

Stop signs coming to 7th Place and Hollowell

City council members unanimously approved Public Works Commission recommendations to install stop signs at 7th Place and Hollowell Avenue and update existing signage along Prospect Avenue between 190th Street and Aviation Boulevard. The signage along Prospect is meant to discourage cut-through traffic along the busy street.
