Chilean state copper giant Codelco expects construction of its US$6.8bn phase II expansion project at its Andina division in central region V to begin in 2014, according to the new environmental impact study (EIS submitted by the company on Friday.

The original EIS was submitted in September 2011, but was withdrawn in November of that year when, anticipating a request from authorities to prepare an amendment to the original document, the company decided to draw up a new EIS.

«The incorporation of new information for projects is a common practice in the environmental evaluation process and constitutes an opportunity for Codelco to improve the proposal submitted to authorities, simplifying the evaluation process,» the company said when it withdrew the original document.

Among the new elements incorporated into the most recent EIS is an ore transport and storage system, the company said in a release.

The expansion aims to increase throughput capacity from the current 92,000t/d to 244,000t/d through the construction of a new concentrator with capacity to process 150,000t/d.

The project will expand the current open pit, waste dump and tailings dam, and also involves constructing new crushing facilities, conveyor belts, a new transmission line and a system for the reuse of process water.

The Andina phase II expansion is expected to add 350,000t/y of fine copper to the division’s production, for total output of 600,000t/y during the first 30 years.
