Final EIS Keystone XL opens

This is the third environmental impact statement that the U.S. State Department Keystone XL has issued since the revision process began in 2008.

TransCanada President Russ Girling, said: "The FEIS confirms the findings of two previous environmental impact statements that the Keystone XL Pipeline will have no significant impact on the environment.

"FEIS today continues to demonstrate the focus on safety and the environment that has invested in the development of this important gas pipeline in North America."

The FEIS nine volumes over 1,000 pages. In the preliminary review of the findings of TransCanada FEIS, the company states that:

  • The analysis of potential impacts associated with the project suggests that there will be no significant impacts to most of the resources along the corridor of the proposed project.
  • The incorporation of the Special Conditions 57 specific projects developed by PHMSA would result in a project that has a degree of security than any national pipeline typically constructed under the current regulations.
  • The proposed route is the shortest and disturb the least amount of land and water bodies resulting in a reduced environmental impact. Alternative routes that were considered to avoid the Ogallala aquifer and the Sandhills of Nebraska are not environmentally preferable or otherwise. Oil sands crude oil does not have characteristics that suggest the possibility of higher rates of corrosion for pipeline transportation.

Now that the FEIS was issued, a comment period of 90 days begins to determine if Keystone XL is the U.S. national interest.

The benefits of the Keystone XL are not limited to states where the pipe. Pipe made of Arkansas for pump engines made in Ohio, workers in almost every state in the U.S. will benefit from the projects and the continued development of oil sands in Canada.

A few days after receiving regulatory approval for Keystone XL, TransCanada to start putting 20,000 Americans working to build the project. In addition to these direct jobs, independent studies estimate that the construction of Keystone XL will create an additional 118,000 indirect and spin-off jobs for local businesses.
