Smart TVs offer a world of options

A smart TV essentially allows you to run extra channels through the internet and access extra content.

IF YOU are a little concerned that your new Smart TV may be smarter than you, Andrew Erlandson can tell you you’re not alone.

Mr Erlandson is a salesman at Harvey Norman Electrical Toowoomba and has seen plenty of confused looks since the new technology was released.

Part of the reason is that different models offer different services, but there is also the fact that they have different levels of capability.

«Smart TV really refers to what you call IPTV, or internet protocol TV, which essentially allows you to run extra channels through the internet and access extra content,» Mr Erlandson said.

«The key differences between one television and the next are that different manufacturers provide different online content and some of the older or cheaper models will only have limited web access.

«Most televisions you could buy today, costing about $2000 or more, will have full web-browsing capabilities like your home PC. Cheaper and older models might only allow you to access things like extra sport and weather channels, but not the internet as a whole.»

When it comes to the extra content, it all depends what you like best and what features you’re more likely to use.

Sony, for instance, has Universal Pictures and Music behind their branding, while Samsung televisions come with Bigpond TV.

Many newer models include access to all major social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter as well as Skype capabilities to enable internet telephoning.

Most will allow you to connect to your home wi-fi network so you can share content with your PC, but it pays to check with your salesman that you are buying a television that suits your needs.

If you want to buy a Smart TV, they’re not all the same. Here are some questions to ask your salesperson:

Does it have full web-browsing capability or just limited access?

What additional content will I get?

Do I need to buy any extra equipment such as a wireless dongle?

Does it have the functions I need?

Have you heard about any new apps for this TV that are soon to be released?
