Intelligent cities to get their own operating system

A city

Cities could soon be taking care of its citizens themselves through an operating system designed for the metropolis.

Urbana operating system functions like a PC operating system, but maintains the buildings, traffic and services running smoothly.

The software takes data from sensors located throughout the city to keep an eye on what's happening.

In the case of a fire, the operating system can handle urban traffic lights to the fire trucks can reach the fire quickly.

The idea is that the operating system to gather data from Urban sensors buried in the buildings and many other places to keep an eye on what is happening in an urban area.

The sensors monitor everything from large-scale events, such as traffic flows across the city to more local phenomena such as temperature sensors in individual rooms.

The operating system completely avoids humans to manage the communication between sensors and devices such as lights, air conditioning or water pumps that influence the quality of life of the city.

Channel all the data from these sensors and services in a system of control over arc had a lot of benefits, said Steve Lewis, Head of Life PlanIT, the company behind Urban OS.

Urban OS should mean better management of buildings and collection of data from many sources give a broader view of key municipal services such as traffic flows, energy and water levels.

"If you use an analogy anatomy, the city has a network such as the nervous, talking to a bunch of sensors collecting data and making the action," said Lewis.

"We distribute the nervous system of the body parts – buildings, streets and other things.

Having a management platform across the urban landscape of a city means a significant cost savings, consistency of application, quality and management skills, he added.

"And it has the local computing capability that allows a building or a car platform to interact with people where they are, managing energy, water, waste, transport, logistics and human interaction in these areas. "

It is treated by the building itself, with very local devices talking to them to find out what the best solution to the current dilemma "

The underlying technology for urban operating system has been developed by McLaren Electronic Systems – the same company that creates sensors for Formula One cars Urban operating system was released at the conference of the machine-2-machine in Rotterdam.

To support the large number of different devices in a city the company has developed a comprehensive set of application services that will run OS Urbano, PlaceApps called – the equivalent of the urban environment of applications on a smartphone.

Independent developers will also be able to build their own applications to collect data and provide certain services around a city.

Lewis said that over time applications on smart phones could connect with Urban operating system to remotely control appliances and energy systems and security equipment to monitor the welfare of the elderly.

It may also prove useful in the event of a fire in a building, he said.

Sensors that point the fire and then the building will use your intelligence to lead people into a safe stairwell, perhaps so the lights flash and alarms become stronger in the direction of the exit.

"It is treated by the building itself, with very local devices talking to them to find out what the best solution to the current dilemma, and then provide direction and orchestration of themselves," said Lewis.

PlanIT life is to work with Cisco and Deutsche Telekom in different parts of the system.

Markus Breitbach Machine Center Machine Competition Deutsche Telekom, said his firm was helping to bring all parties together urban operating system.

"Everyone is talking about 50 million devices, which means a huge amount of data collected, but nobody is really concerned about their management and put in a context – and Urbanism OS can do just that," he said.

"If there is a fire alarm on the fifth floor and the elevator goes to the next floor, the light goes on – but also the traffic lights change according to your time, traffic in the right direction to fire workers can be through.

"And this is what OS is providing this urban type of solution to analyze large amounts of data, enter a magical context and actions."

A test for the Urban operating system currently under construction in Portugal. For his work in developing smart cities, PlanIT life was selected as a Technology Pioneer of the World Economic Forum 2012.
