Elko – A final environmental impact statement for the Plan of U.S. Forest Service Travel Management will be released soon.
"We hope to be published in late (or early the last week (this week," said Ruby Mountains / Jarbidge Ranger District Gar Abbas on Thursday.
The document, as well as maps of the proposed actions will be published on the website of the Forest Service in www.fs.usda.gov / htnf. CD will also be sent by mail to the mailing list for the Forest Service.
"There will be a 45-day (period of public review and issue a record of decision soon," said Abbas.
The Travel Management Plan seeks to designate thousands of miles of forest roads in the mountain town, Ruby Mountains and Jarbidge Ranger Districts.
The plan is on the agenda of the Elko County Commission meeting on Wednesday for possible action.
Abbas sent a letter to Commission President Demar Dahl last week, calling on the province to participate in a workshop on the final EIS.
County staff plan to seek an extension of six months of public comment once the final EIS is released, but the Forest Service is offering the workshop as an alternative.
"I think in a day or two of the discussion focused, we can offer a comprehensive knowledge of the FEIS, the supporting documentation and all changes made since the publication of our Draft EIS," Abbas wrote in the letter.
Randy Brown, Elko County planning, zoning and natural resources, did not return a phone call last week.
The process of implementing a travel management plan for the Elko area has been going on for several years.
Forest Service districts across the country are required to implement a plan following a 2005 executive order of President George W. Bush.
Mountain City District Ranger Tom Montoya said in June that the three ranger districts in the county of Elko, are among the last in the country to obtain an approved plan.
The original deadline for a record of the decision was in December 2009.
