Monday marks the end of the 30-day review and comment period for the "Over The River" Final Environmental Impact Statement.
The Bureau of Land Management released the Final EIS in late July, selecting Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s original vision, Alternative 1A, to suspend 5.9 miles of fabric above the Arkansas River. The temporary work of art is expected to be exhibited for two consecutive weeks in August 2014.
To view the Final EIS which contains a comprehensive evaluation of all project impacts and benefits, visit www.blm.gov/co, and click on "Over The River. "
The document states that "global impacts, local businesses and commercial traffic as a result of traffic delays during installation and removal would be negligible to minor and short-term time due to limited construction activities and measures of traffic management measures. "
The Final EIS states local service providers, including emergency services, would be able to meet demands of both visitors and residents from the beginning of the installation period through the end of the removal period; and identifies no "Significant Impacts" to any terrestrial, avian or aquatic wildlife as a result of OTR when the identified mitigation measures are implemented.
Total economic output generated by the project in Colorado is expected to exceed $111.3 million, including the creation of more than 620 jobs, the majority of which will be designated to local residents. After the current period of review and comment, the BLM issued a "Record of Decision" this fall, which will determine the final decision of the body.
Christo will work to secure all remaining permits, including those in Fremont and Chaffee counties. To send a comment to the BLM, co_otr_comments@blm.gov email.
