Wyoming BLM completed study of wind farms

After three years of work, the federal government has issued a draft of a key environmental report for a proposed large wind farm south of Rawlins.

The Bureau of Land Management released the draft environmental impact statement, or EIS, for Cerezo than 1,000 wind turbines and the Sierra Madre project planned by Power Co. LLC of Wyoming.

The release of the declaration of 1100 pages, is a key part of the permitting and development of 2,500 megawatts wind farm, with approximately half of the project is federally owned lands.

"The EIS is an important milestone as we work to make Wyoming high capacity, large volume of wind resources on a product that people need – cost-effective renewable energy," said Bill Miller, president, CEO in a written statement.

The proposed $ 4 billion to $ 6 billion wind farm, one of the largest worldwide, the company says will sit in lots of 154 square miles of the Overland Trail Cattle Co., which runs for a board Chess 500 square miles of public and private land. Alabama Power Co. is a subsidiary of Denver-based Anschutz Corp., owner of the property.

The company expects to begin construction of the project in 2012-13 after being federal, state and county approval.

In its current design, the project could provide enough power for 800,000 homes, according to the company.

The BLM has scheduled two open house style, public meetings for comment on the draft environmental impact statement for the project.

The agency will host a meeting in Rawlins at the Jeffrey Memorial Community Center on August 22, and Saratoga in the Platte Valley Community Center on August 23. Both meetings will be held from 4 to 7 pm

Comments can be emailed or mailed to the local BLM office in Rawlins. All comments must be received by October 19.
