Mercedes SLK gets AMG V8

A 416bhp, 5.5-litre V8 that manages to return 33.6mpg? That's what AMG is promising to deliver with the new Mercedes SLK55 AMG, by using a naturally aspirated version of its latest performance powerplant.

The flagship SLK, which will debut at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show alongside the new diesel version of the roadster, will be the first four-cylinder AMG as well as being faster and more powerful than its predecessor.

Sound confusing? That's because the SLK55's engine will take a leaf out of the Mercedes F1 operation's and use a fuel-saving system that deactivates the extra cylinders when they’re not in use.

Even without the twin-turbochargers of the CLS AMG, the engine still produces 416bhp – 45 more than its predecessor – and a muscular 540Nm of torque. But perhaps what's more impressive is that fuel economy has jumped up by a whopping 30 percent, and carbon emissions are down to just 199g/km, thanks to start/stop, and the unique ability to shut down half of its cylinders under lighter loads.

This clever trick can be activated at any time, using what Mercedes calls a 'Controlled Efficiency' button located on the transmission tunnel. The system is active between 800 to 3600rpm, but even then, it will still have a minimum of 230Nm of torque available at any time, and will switch back to eight cylinders in just 30 milliseconds.

These changes should help it out-muscle key rivals like the forthcoming BMW Z4 M and Porsche Cayman R, while being more efficient than both.
