"Smart" car keys are coming

Eindhoven, Netherlands – A new generation of "smart" keys soon find your car, upload your destination and tell you how much fuel is left in your vehicle. NXP Semiconductors has announced the availability of production-ready single-chip technology multifunctional car keys, the KeyLink Lite.

Using Near Field Communications (NFC Technology, Lite KeyLink allows automakers to offer foreign keys that connect to NFC-enabled devices such as mobile phones, tablets and notebooks.

The company said five new applications are available:

Car Finder - Records of the keys to your GPS coordinates of the vehicle parking position past. This can be read by NFC-enabled mobile phone, using a service like Google Maps to help locate the car.

Route Planner - A destination can be entered on a home computer and transferred via the key. The destination is automatically downloaded to the car navigation system, so that the programming of the destination in the car via a touch screen or joystick is not necessary.

The state car - Drivers can find out how much fuel the car before leaving home or office, vehicle and service history can be stored in the key.

Self-diagnosis - Diagnostic data can be transferred from the car to a computer via the key, then uploaded to a website service for diagnosis.

The car customization - Manufacturers can pre-fit cars with upgraded services that can later be unlocked by the consumer. Permits may be obtained from the automaker, for example, an online application and stored in the car key that activates features automatically the next time the driver enters the car.
