Randle’s improved health key for D-line

The month of December has been good for Thad Randle.

Not much wear and tear. Not much contact. Just what he needed for his chronic knee soreness.

«During the season when you don’t get a day off, and you go from camp and then it’s week after week after week, it’s a lot of wear and tear,»  Nebraska defensive line coach Rick Kaczenski said after Thursday’s practice in Orlando. «Now he’s had a little bit of time in December to throttle back. He’s got a little bit more strength to it and feels a heck of a lot better. «

The 6-foot-1, 295-pound junior’s improved health obviously is crucial to a defensive line that lacks depth, particularly in the interior. I wrote about that lack of depth, and how it could impact Nebraska against Georgia, in a column for Friday.

Randle, of Galena Park, Texas, suffered his injury late last season, and the pain lingers. It’s common to see Randle limping off the practice field. He plays in pain.

He doesn’t practice a lot during the season. The coaches are mostly concerned about getting him ready for games.

He has appeared in 12 games this season, with five starts. He has 19 tackles, including a season-high four against UCLA.

«With that injury, it’s going to take rest and time,» Kaczenski said. «We have to be smart.»

As far as Randle’s playing time, «We’re leaving it up to him — let pain be his guide,» Kaczenski said. «He’s proven he’s tough. We’re not questioning his toughness. If he can’t go, get yourself out of there. Just be smart.
