Public support will determine the future of Great Keppel Island.

THE next 30 days will determine the future of the Great Keppel Island Revitalisation Plan with the development’s approval dependant on support for the environmental impact statement.

The EIS was the result of two years work by more than 90 technical experts. The 4779 page document was released for public comment yesterday.

GKI Revitalisation Plan development manager Anthony Aiossa said the EIS was an integral part of the planning process and encouraged people to take advantage of the submission period.

«We want to work together to create the best plan for the whole community,» he said.

«The GKI Revitalisation Plan could be a new beginning for not just Great Keppel Island, but the Queensland tourism industry as a whole.

«The resort will be a world class, eco-friendly tourist destination … the flow-on effects for Capricorn Coast and Central Queensland businesses will be substantial with over $150 million generated in the region.»

The project is expected to create more than 1400 new jobs, and CEO of Capricorn Enterprise Mary Carroll said as one of the seven priority projects for the region, the plan had their full support.

Mr Aiossa said that the voice of support wasn’t always the loudest and urged people who supported the project to register on the website at www.gkiresort.com.au.
