SHORT-TIME working is rapidly becoming commonplace in British business.
Steelmakers Tata have done it in Port Talbot. And lots of other companies are following suit as they cope with a downturn in orders. The automotive industry has been particularly severely affected. But no sector is immune.
So maybe we shouldn’t really be that surprised that even our health services aren’t excluded from this phenomenon.
And good on all sides for agreeing to it. It is a sensible way forward.
There are huge advantages to the approach of putting employees on flexible working rather than cutting them adrift altogether, not least that the employer has a better chance of keeping its skilled workforce not just balanced, but intact and available for the upturn when it eventually arrives. Importantly, of course, it will also help achieve cash savings. And for a health trust some £12 million in the red, it’s an aspect that cannot be underplayed.
We just hope those allowed to opt for the flexible approach are chosen carefully. We are told it won’t impact on frontline services.
Good. Let’s just hope that’s how it pans out!
