NEW ORLEANS — University of Kentucky freshman Michael Kidd-Gilchrist didn't have his best game of the season Saturday against Louisville in the Final Four, but the forward had a big stretch when the Wildcats needed him.

Kidd-Gilchrist had two straight baskets after the Cardinals tied the score at 49 with 9:12 left in the game, helping the Wildcats stay in front and win 69-61 in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

"I wanted to stay aggressive on the offensive end and keep doing that," he said. "I thought I helped my team out."

Kidd-Gilchrist played only six minutes in the first half, scoring no points and picking up two fouls. He did have two rebounds.

He finished the game with nine points and four rebounds in 23 minutes.

"I think our guys did a very good job on him, but he's a great player and I love him," U of L coach Rick Pitino said. "He's one of my favorite players in college basketball."

Kidd-Gilchrist had two of the biggest buckets of the game. After Peyton Siva tied it at 49 with a 3-pointer, UK's Anthony Davis missed a shot but grabbed the rebound and dished to Kidd-Gilchrist, who put it in to make it 51-49.

U of L then missed a shot, and on UK's next possession, Kidd-Gilchrist had the ball at the top of the key and drove the left side of the lane for a dunk.

"I saw the lane right there, so I just took it and got the dunk," he said. "I was just trying to do what I could to help my team win."

Blackshear comes up big

Plagued by injuries most of the season, freshman Wayne Blackshear came up big for the Cardinals.

The 6-foot-5 Blackshear came off the bench for nine points and four rebounds in 14 minutes. He was 3 of 5 from the field.

"I just wanted to come out and be more aggressive than in the past," he said. "I felt like I had been playing good in practice recently, and I wanted to carry that momentum into this game.
