Queensland Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney has announced approval for a new weir for the booming Gladstone area.
Coordinator-General Barry Broe on Monday cleared the way for SunWater Limited and the Gladstone Area Water Board to prepare the environmental impact statement (EIS for the Lower Fitzroy River Infrastructure Project.
The project involves raising Eden Bann Weir and constructing a new weir at Rookwood on the Fitzroy River.
Mr Seeney said the project would diversify the water supply of Gladstone, a booming gas port, which relies on water from Awoonga Dam.
Fish and turtle passages would be developed in consultation with government environment authorities, he said.
The weir projects were identified as options for meeting short to medium-term urban and industrial needs in the area.
The EIS will assess any potential environmental, economic or social impacts of the proposed project before being advertised for public comment.
