Gary Paffett goes into this weekend's opening round of the German Touring Car Masters (DTM in Hockenheim hoping his new Mercedes can help him earn a second drivers' title.
The Haverhill driver, who won the series in 2005, is confident of a more successful season this year and is optimistic that the reliability issues that plagued his campaign last year will be eradicated with the new car.
The AMG Mercedes C-Coupe replaces last year's C-Class model and with a number of changes to the regulations to coincide with BMW's entry into the championship, Paffett has good reason to be optimistic.
«We've done a lot of testing since October last year and it's gone pretty well,» he said.
«The car seems to be very good and I really like it this year. I'm looking to be fighting for the championship, that's where I want to be.
«Last year was difficult as we had a few reliability problems and we need to make sure they don't happen again.
«There are only 10 races in the series, so if you lose out in a race because of a reliability issue it can be really costly.
«Quite a big part of the car is standard this year to make it easier for BMW coming into the series.
«In the last couple of years the championship has been missing something so it's great to have new teams and drivers coming into it.
«I'm looking forward to it more than I was last year.»
A strong driver line-up could throw up any number of title contenders. Paffett expects Mercedes drivers Ralf Schumacher and Jamie Green to be in contention along with Audi regulars Timo Scheider, Mike Rockenfeller and Mattias Ekstrom.
The BMW line-up is also impressive and includes defending champion Martyn Tomczyk, Bruno Spengler and former touring car drivers Andy Priaulx and Augusto Farfus.
Qualifying takes place today, with the race at 1pm (UK time tomorrow.
