Pioneer JVsoftball posts key victory

The Pioneer Patriots junior varsity softball team scored three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings for a 6-4 come-from-behind victory over host Yuba City High School on Friday.

Pioneer’s victory created a tie atop the Tri-County Conference standings as both squads have 6-1 league records. The Patriots are 12-3 overall.

Cody Tibbs and Mercedes Durgin scored the go-ahead runs in the seventh when teammate Jordan Wade’s fly ball to right was dropped for an error. Durgin had tied the game earlier in the inning with an RBI double which scored Kylie Juarez from second.

Yuba City led 3-0 before Pioneer tied it with three runs in the top of the sixth. Jennifer Vasquez’s RBI double and a sacrifice fly by Dominique Rodriguez were the big blows.

Pitcher Angelica Dark struck out seven and allowed just two earned runs for Pioneer.

The Patriots will hold a Hit-A-Thon fundraiser today from 10 a.m. to noon at the Pioneer JV field.

Woodland Christian baseball coach Jerry Miler said he thought starter Shane Norton had good enough stuff to throw a no-hitter on Friday. The Cardinals starter struck out seven in three innings.

Miller said Norton will be back on the mound on Tuesday as the Cardinals travel to face Delta at 4 p.m.

Anthony Castaneda went 2 for 5 with four RBI and a double for Woodland Christian.

— The Patriots completed the sweep in Natomas by beating the Nighthawks in six innings.

Jacob Grant got the start, going four innings and allowing four hits while striking out four. Evan Shimada pitched the final two innings, allowing only one hit while recording five strikeouts.

Anthony Bosser went 2 for 3 with two doubles.

Pioneer (17-2, 11-0 TCC travels to face Elk Grove today at 10 a.m.
