As the fish Washington Wildlife Commission prepares to meet Thursday to consider a recommended wolf conservation and management plan, a new controversy has erupted in Colville, where a hunting guide and veteran point guard is to the alarm about a possible recent attack that killed at least two dead dogs and a neighborhood on the edge.
The Commission has not completed the process of the wolf plan. Three special sessions are scheduled:
The Commission has scheduled three special meetings to discuss the conservation of the wolf and recommended Management Plan and public comment. These meetings are scheduled for August 29 in Ellensburg, and October 6 and November 3 in Olympia. Final decision on the plan is expected to occur at the Commission meeting December 2011
The final EIS can be viewed here . That is a document that will take time to read and digest. Under the plan, the recommended option is Alternative 2. According to the Executive Summary, this is the logic:
Alternative 2, wolf conservation and management plan, is the preferred alternative because it meets the goals and objectives for establishing a long-term viable population of wolves in Washington, while at the same time trying to wolf won conflicts and interactions between wolves and wild ungulates. The final preferred alternative was modified from its previous version in the EIS based on public comments, scientists, and agency input.
According to the current document, Alternative 2 "provides a geographical moderate recovery objectives for less protection and exclusion from the list, with an emphasis in sufficient numbers to be present at the waterfalls of the South / North West recovery from the coast, but does not require the establishment of wolves in fourth Pacific Coast region for the recovery of exclusion. This alternative includes a variety of proactive options, control non-lethal and lethal to address conflicts of cattle, and generous compensation for confirmed and probable damage in cattle. "
At this point, hunters may want to ask, "But what about the plundering of state elk and deer herds? "This is what can be found on pages 36 and 37 of the EIS:
"The modification of this provision in the revised Preferred Alternative 2 was the elimination of the phrase about" the management of ungulate harvest the benefit of the wolves if the investigation determines the wolves are below the targets for recovery and dam is limiting "(Table 1. EIA Project Alternative 2 directed management for healthy ungulate populations through habitat improvement, harvest management, and reducing poaching to improve abundance in areas occupied or which may be occupied by wolves. Also included was a provision that if the investigation determines that wolves were not meeting recovery objectives in localized areas and prey availability was a key factor that limits, WDFW would consider adjusting the levels of recreational harvest to provide prey suitable for wolves. This provision was eliminated in the revised preferred alternative 2.
"The maintenance of robust populations dam will benefit the conservation of wolves in Washington, providing adequate prey for wolves, providing hunters and spectators entertainment wildlife with continued opportunities for hunting and see game, and reduce chances of predation of livestock by providing an alternative food for pets. Recommended Revised Alternative 2, WDFW achieved for healthy ungulate populations through habitat improvement, harvest management, and reduction of illegal hunting according to management plans of the hunt. "
As this document is made public, however, Colville-based hunting guide Dale Denney was shooting a letter to the Wildlife Commission fish that is bound to raise hackles among big game hunters throughout the state. Denney letter, detailing an alleged attack by wolves in a couple of miles from the seat of Stevens County and the county's largest city, is now receiving comments on the html "rel =" nofollow "> Chase-Washington forum, where wolves are getting attention.
"I will say this in all seriousness, if these wolves come to our private property and start killing my dogs I'll try to avoid it if they feel threatened by a wolf coming towards me in the process of saving my dogs I'm going to protect. "Dale Denney, Colville
Denney is not alarmist, but it is definitely alarmed. By the time he has completed this process of hearing, you probably have lots of company.
