Little people in the capital

Thinking of visiting Wellington in late November? Best you book ahead. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has its world premiere in Wellington on November 28 and the city’s tourism chief, David Perks, says hotels are expected to be full of fans, film crew, stars and media. «There’s going to be a simply unmissable buzz pulsing through the coolest little capital in the world,» he says.

Filming has taken place in key sites across NZ, but distributor Warner Bros has been secretive about them. However, tours of Hobbiton, a re-creation of Tolkien’s Shire from the Lord of the Rings film trilogy, built near Matamata on the North Island, are still popular.

In Shackleton’s footsteps

Wanted: 10 adventurers to take part in an expedition retracing the footsteps of Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton. Duration: 56 days. Cost: $30,000.

The Shackleton Epic, led by British-Australian explorer Tim Jarvis, aims to be the first expedition to authentically re-create Shackleton’s almost-1500-kilometre voyage across the Southern Ocean from Elephant Island to South Georgia, and his subsequent crossing of the island’s mountains.

The expedition will use a replica lifeboat – and only equipment that was available to Shackleton – but will be followed by a support vessel, the TS Pelican, on which 10 public berths are available. It sets sail from Punta Arenas, Chile, on January 3. Phone Intrepid Travel on 1300 797 010 or see shackletonepic.com.

Warning on scams

Travel insurer Suresave has released a list of key scams travellers to Thailand may encounter.

Among them are fake police who try to issue visitors with on-the-spot fines; tuk-tuk drivers who «detour» via gem stores where the stones are nothing more than polished glass; touts who hand visitors a bag of corn to feed the birds outside Bangkok’s Grand Palace, but then reveal the feed wasn’t free and charge high prices; and children who challenge tourists to a game of Connect Four but are unbeatable because they have memorised almost every combination.
