WHILE we were sitting around one afternoon, a lone bee found its way into our living room. My kids were scared and ducked for cover as it buzzed around looking for a way out. Many people associate the insect with its deadly sting, but upon closer look, it is actually a pretty phenomenal creature. Let me share with you some of its great qualities. In fact, there are plenty of life lessons we can re-apply to ourselves and our kids.
BEES CAN'T FLY BUT THEY DON'T KNOW IT
Do you know that scientists had examined bumblebees and believed that a bee is not built to fly? Its wings aren't large enough like birds, and can't support its relatively huge body. This belief has spread among scientists studying bees. But fortunately, this was only a hypothesis based on the bee's physical structure. It doesn't matter to the bee as it has found a way to lift its huge body with its tiny wing, defying all scientific logic.
Now, how many times in our lives have we allowed other people to say that we can't "fly"? The moment we believe it, that will be the end of our road. Let's be like a bee! Defy all logic and hypotheses out there, and just fly away. Believe that we can do it and we will achieve it. Tell our kids to learn this important lesson too. There will be plenty of doubters out there but only we know our true capabilities.
BEES LOVE NICE SCENT
Once the bees fly away, they don't waste their time and energy looking for useless things. Their main objective is to seek out sweet scents from flowers in the garden. They only go for the clean, beautiful objects and avoid the dirty and filthy ones. The flower pollens that they carry are uncontaminated, containing hardly any impurities. Otherwise, the seeds will not grow healthy and future harvest may be threatened. People have used this phenomenon to compare the bees with flies. The latter are known to prefer the opposite. They go from filth to filth looking for food, spreading diseases along the way.
Back to human, many of us behave like the bees and the flies. Those behaving like a bee only see goodness in other people. They see hope and opportunities, solutions over problems. They care enough to give proper feedback and are humble enough to accept them. On the contrary, those behaving like a fly are always suspicious of other people. They are often judgmental, spread negativity wherever they go and can't accept guidance from others for they think their way is the only way.
THE CURING POWER OF HONEY
The pure pollens and flower nectars collected by the bees are then transported home. Along the way, they combine with the bees' own proteins and enzymes to produce honey. This mixture is then deposited into a beeswax comb to mature into honey as we know it. Honey is known for its amazing natural benefits, such as being an energy booster, building immunity and as a natural remedy for many ailments. Just a few drops of honey will do wonders for the whole family.
It seems that honey offers more benefits to humans than to the bees. We should be thankful to them for that. Make honey as part of the family's diet. Unlike our Western counterparts, Malaysians generally do not take honey as much as they should. Parents can take the lead by including more honey in their daily diet. Encourage the young to try it as early as possible to develop the taste. After all, it was one of Prophet Muhammad's favourite.
ORDERLY COLONY
Honey can never be produced if the bee colony is not in order. Bees are known for having one of the most orderly living conditions among all creatures. Each colony member has its role and they work well together to achieve a common objective. Their communication skills are top notch, harmoniously buzzing and humming their way in and out.
How many parents would love to have such a harmonious and productive home? The key is in a clear definition of roles and responsibilities of each family member. Empower them to do their tasks well and provide support whenever necessary. Create a fair system to eliminate any ill feelings and our family will be buzzing with joy too.
So there you have it! Isn't the bee a great creature? The next time you see it, please don't kill it. It's God's creation that brings with it lessons for us all. It's up to us to choose which one to follow: to be like a bee that believes in itself and provide goodness to self and others, or be like a fly that spreads diseases all over the world.
