An in-situ uranium mining project reached the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS draft phase earlier this month, drawing Cheyenne-based Cameco Resources one step closer to bringing uranium mining back to the Gas Hills Mining District.
The Gas Hills, located in Fremont and Natrona counties, have been the target of lately, but none have yet materialized through the regulatory haze. The interest in the area represents a revival for area uranium mining, which largely died in the 1980s after extensive activity surrounding the 1950s-era discovery of uranium below the water table.
The EIS calls for 25 years of mine operation in the area that will require installation of processing facilities, wastewater disposal facilities, roads, header houses and power lines on the surface and subsurface wells, pipelines, electrical lines and communication cables. Five sequentially developed mine units would be created during the first 15 years of the project.
The company expects to have about 50 to 70 full-time employees and contractors on site during operation. Cameco expects to fill most, if not all of the jobs locally from a three-county unemployed base of 4,000 people.
The draft EIS is meant to assist the Bureau of Land Management in allowing or denying the development, and public comment on the matter will be accepted through Dec. 31.
Public meetings on Dec. 4 at 4 p.m. at the Fremont County Library in Riverton and Dec. 5 at 4 p.m. at the library’s main location in Lander will be held to provide an opportunity to review the proposal and project information. BLM resource specialists will be available to provide information, answer questions and receive public comments. Comment forms will be available. The draft EIS is available for review on the project website at www.blm.gov/wy/st/en/info/NEPA/documents/lfo/gashills.html.
Comments can be submitted to the BLM during the public meetings; by email: Gas_Hills_Uranium_EIS_WY@blm. gov; by fax: 307-332-8444; or by mail: Bureau of Land Management, Attn: Kristin Yannone, Lander Field Office, 1335 Main Street, Lander, WY 82520.
