The draft Environmental Impact Statement for redeveloping the Kapalama area into a 94-acre shipping container yard has been released by the Hawaii Office of Environmental Quality Control.
The state Department of Transportation has proposed redeveloping the area to increase shipping container capacity, and the plan calls for a new pier with the berthing capacity for two ships, buildings to support operations there and other needed facilities.
Redeveloping Kapalama would allow Horizon Lines Inc. to move from its Sand Island facility, adjacent to Matson Inc., and would boost both company's efficiency, officials from the shipping companies told PBN.
