KEY BISCAYNE (CBSMiami – After being on the road for roughly six months, a Washington man concluded his cross-country fundraiser in Key Biscayne Saturday evening.
He traveled on foot from Washington state to South Florida in order to raise money for his Perspiration for Education project.
"I lived in Baton Rouge for a year, and when I was there I had a little brother, who is really exceptionally smart, but because of his circumstances with a single working mom and no dad I knew he and his sister with the schools they were at and were going to be going, I didn't feel like their needs would be met," said Greg Hamblock.
So, the 25-year-old wanted to do something to change that and put his money – and feet – where his mouth was.
He decided to run cross country in hopes of raising enough money to send his little brother, Chris, and Chris' little sister, Meagan, to private school.
"I feel like whatever community he is part of when he is an adult, at work or church or the city he lives in, those communities are going to be better served if he's well educated than if he's not," Hamblock said.
So with only the clothes on his back, Hamblock says he stepped out on faith, often sleeping under bridges during his journey.
The roughly 4,000-mile trek was hard on Hamblock's body, but he pushed through the pain for what he calls a meaningful, living legacy.
"These are only two lives, really, but I feel like if I can sort of help them really break the cycle of poverty in their family, but also help prepare them to go out and serve the world better than they are going to right now, you just multiply your influence!" Hamblock said.
Hamblock's goal was to raise $60,000, but at last check he had raised a quarter of that.
