The writing on the wall had been in capital letters for months. The
announcement yesterday of Lewis Hamilton's departure from McLaren — who
nurtured his outrageous talent from gauche karter to polished world champion
— to their rivals at Mercedes was no surprise to those who had watched the
increasingly agitated figure in the team's garage. Hamilton had ditched
Anthony, his father, manager and the architect of his career, and now it was
time to part company with his mentors at McLaren.
