EIS process favours developers: Greens

QUEENSLAND’S environmental approvals process is stacked in favour of developers, Greens Senator Larissa Waters says.

Senator Waters visited Great Keppel Island on Tuesday, where Tower Holdings is planning a major resort reconstruction, including a 250-bed hotel, golf course, 150 apartments and a 250-berth marina to be built in stages over 12 years.

Senator Waters said she had encountered «almost universal» opposition to the plan in its current form.

«It seems to be far too much on what is a small and well-preserved island in the middle of our World Heritage Area,» Senator Waters told AAP.

Residents had little chance to voice their concerns, she said.

«Unfortunately, our whole EIS (environmental impact statement process is stacked in favour of developers from the word go,» Senator Waters said.

«Developers pay consultants to say whatever they like, and the community can’t afford to pay consultants and the government doesn’t employ their own consultants to do independent scrutiny.»

The response period for the state-based EIS concluded last month.

Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney said more than 60 per cent of the 10,000 responses received backed the development.
