Mercedes sought in fatality

Police on Thursday announced a lead on a possible suspect vehicle in the death of a man struck by a car as he walked along Walmsley Boulevard in South Richmond.

Based on evidence found at the scene, Richmond police are now hunting for a 1996 to 2002 Mercedes E320 sedan in Tuesday night’s death of Jeffrey Shawn Smith. Police are asking the public to help them find the car and said it might have damage to its windshield and passenger side.

The car also would have factory-installed Bosch fog lights, one of which may be missing from the passenger side. Authorities said they got the lead from evidence found at the scene that was traced back to a manufacturer.

About 8:40 p.m. Tuesday, Richmond police received a call for a person down in the 4500 block of Walmsley Boulevard. Smith, a 33-year-old landscaper, was pronounced dead at the scene after officers found him lying in the westbound lane of Walmsley.

Smith had walked from his home in the 3900 block of Dorset Road to the 7-Eleven in the 4700 block of Walmsley Boulevard and was walking back toward home when he was struck, relatives said.

Police said Smith was walking east along the westbound lane of Walmsley near the Dorset Road intersection. Authorities said it was unclear whether he was walking in the road or on the side of the road. There is no sidewalk along that part of Walmsley.

Police asked anyone with information to call investigators at (804 646-1343 or Crime Stoppers at (804 780-1000. Information may be texted to Crime Stoppers at 274637, using the key word «iTip» followed by the tip. Both Crime Stoppers methods are anonymous.
