First meeting held on Village access

CREEDE Representatives from the Forest Service, Colorado Department of Transportation and The Village at Wolf Creek were on hand to answer questions at the first of three public meetings to discuss the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the access project.

The meetings, first in Creede, then in Pagosa Springs and Del Norte, have been arranged to allow people to come and ask any questions they may have about the access options and the process involved in granting access to the property owned by Leavell-McCombs Joint Venture.

Forest Service personnel are collecting comments to ensure that they have fully considered all of the implications of completing a land exchange with LMJV, granting access or to take no action. The feasibility analysis for the exchange was completed in January of 2011 and now the DEIS is complete, and the public has 45 days to submit comments on the draft.

Dan Dallas, the Rio Grande National Forest supervisor, will ultimately consider all of the comments, along with the draft EIS when he makes his final decision on the exchange. Many people have questioned the potential benefit to the forest service in completing an exchange. Dave Dyer the RGNF natural resources planner said that the exchange would be, economically about the same for the forest service.

Other possible benefits identified by the forest service include scaled down development on the land, relocating private land away from the ski area and returning wetlands and a perennial stream to the forest service.

The draft EIS is available to view online at fs.usda.gov/projects/riograndee/landmanagement/projects and copies are available to examine at the public meetings. Copies of the draft EIS on disk can be requested through the Divide Ranger District Office at 657-3321.

Comments may be submitted in writing to, Dan Dallas, Forest Supervisor, c/o Tom Malecek, Divide District Ranger, Rio Grande National Forest, 13308 West Highway 160, Del Norte, Co, 81132.

Faxed comments should be sent to 657-6035 and they can also be emailed to comments-rocky-mountain-rio-grande-divide@fs.fed.us. Prepared comment forms are also being given out at the public meetings.

The final public meeting is planned for Thursday, Aug. 30 at 5:30 in Del Norte at the County Courthouse Annex building.
