DUBLIN–(BUSINESS WIRE–

Dublin – Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/92rnhp/smart_grids_need

Grids – Need for Holistic Approach to Energy Policies»
report
to their offering.

After the collapse of the Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in
December 2009, BuddeComm highlighted the fact that, while China was one
of the parties crucially involved in the collapse of the talks, at the
same time it showed its own commitment towards climate change issues,
energy efficiency, smart grids and so on.

Three years later the results are becoming evident. The rest of the
world has continued to squabble over these issues without making any
significant progress, while China, unhampered by political battles, has
been steaming ahead with an holistic approach.

This report gives an overview of the high-level political situation that
developed after Copenhagen. It covers the complex and important issues
that still need to be addressed, and then moves on to explore the
opportunities that are now opening up in the area of smart energy.

Recent Developments:

The Copenhagen Summit was the first global event where countries came
together to address a common cause. This in itself was an enormous
achievement – a beacon to illuminate future global policy-making; Most
western countries the political problems have produced a fragmented and
ad hoc approach to climate change and energy efficiency policies and
initiatives, while China in the meantime has been pursuing a far more
holistic approach.

Job spotlight: Sylvia Mercedes Trelles, freelance translator – Columbus Ledger

The road that has brought Sylvia Mercedes Trelles to this stage in her career as a freelance translator or interpreter has been a long and winding one.

It was two decades ago that Puerto Rico-born Mercedes Trelles graduated with an industrial engineering degree in Atlanta and ventured to South Carolina to work with the textile manufacturer Milliken Co. But that only lasted three years.

«I wasn’t terribly happy with my job because I had to deal with machines all the time and I’m more interested in dealing with people,» the daughter of a retired pharmacist says. «Even though I love computers and technology, I still felt isolated.»

She then shifted gears, going even more high-tech with a job in the documentation department at credit-card processor TSYS, which would eventually lead her to the firm’s translation services department because of her fluid Spanish skills.

Her 18-year career there was interrupted only by a one-year stint as a Spanish teacher at Pacelli High School in 1998 before heading back to TSYS, where she would work until a wave of layoffs in 2010 put her and more than 200 other staffers out of a job.

«It was hard for me. After being there so long, I felt like, oh gosh, my world is coming to an end,» says Mercedes Trelles, who harbors no ill feelings for her former employer, a place she loved to work.

Following some soul searching and a few months as technical writer at Synovus, Mercedes Trelles, 44 and a single mom, earned her certification from the National Language Service Corps last fall. She is now setting up a translation service that she believes will be valuable to both corporate employers in Columbus, as well as some agencies at Fort Benning.

The Ledger-Enquirer sat down with Mercedes Trelles recently to discuss her journey to this point, what it has been like making a living from languages, and the life ahead of her. It has been edited for length and clarity.

They were starting a project with Mexico and they needed bilingual people. They were looking for training people. It helped that I had a background with numbers and I love numbers. I do calculus for fun. I’m sure it’s a disease, but that’s OK. I’m not dangerous. (laughs I could do Sudoku in my sleep.

I loved it. I learned the system. I can still balance (numbers in my sleep with different currencies. I wrote the technical documentation and information bulletins.

Barry Carswell, who I used to work with, he would tell me: You need to think of translations not as looking up a word and then telling me the same word in a different language. You need to extract the meaning of what you’re trying to say and figure out in your head how can you put it in a different language. And once you have that idea, that concept, then you put it down on paper. I learned a lot from him.

We had all of the subject matter experts from TSYS that knew each sub-system really well, and then we had people in Mexico that knew the (financial industry very well. So we had to be in the middle trying to figure out how to say what they’re trying to convey in a language that they understand. There were some long hours, but it was fascinating. I loved that job.

My dad has always given me the best advice. He always said: Find something you love and just do it. He saw how much I love translation. … That’s what gave me the idea that I need to start my own agency. I’m qualified to do this work because I’ve been doing it for so long. And I’m passionate about languages. I already know Portuguese, French, and I’m starting to learn Italian and I’m going to be taking German.

Knowing so much about the banking and credit-card processing industries, and with having such a big company like TSYS here, I think that I can capitalize on that.

I think learning to watch people and analyze their body language, their facial expressions. I think that’s like 90 percent of the deal. … And I’m fascinated by cultures and people. … I think for any human being that’s really the key. Just treat them like a person and listen to them and you’ll be fascinated about how much you can learn from them.

No. I think they are very overpriced. Somebody like me, I have a different way of learning. It’s so easy for me to approach people because I’m friendly.

They’re all about the same because they’re all romance languages. And they all come from Latin, so they’re pretty similar.

In the industry, it’s like 26 cents a word, for a written word. For an hour, the rates are through the roof. It can be very expensive.

Google Translate I thought was a threat. But it turns out that it’s not. We can try to translate the sentence, ‘The PIN (personal identification number is alphanumeric.’ For «the,» Google Translate will give you the article in Spanish, ‘el’ or ‘la,’ depending on what it is. Then we go to PIN and we have an acronym. Now the word for pin in Spanish can be translated as «alfiler,» which is the pin that you use for sewing. So if you translate using Google Translate you can end up with … ‘The sewing pin is alphanumeric.’ It makes no sense whatsover. So you always need to have a human edit whatever is translated.

Do an immersion program. Go to a country and immerse yourself in the culture and find some people to talk with. Just get together and talk about your day.

Megaupload’s Dotcom gets money and Mercedes back, involved in political scandal

Kim Dotcom, the colorful head of the file-sharing website Megaupload, will now have some of his assets returned to him following a seizure of his personal and corporate assets in February. According to a report on the New Zealand-based website, Stuff.co.nz, a High Court lawyer ruled that a court-ordered seizure issued in January was not valid, despite the fact that an interim order has been in place for two months.

Dotcom is to receive NZ$750,000 ($614,000 in cash that had been confiscated from him, in addition to his Mercedes-Benz G55AMG worth NZ$250,000 ($204,000 with the license plate «POLICE.» Dotcom is also continuing to receive an NZ$20,000 ($16,000 monthly living allowance off of the interest of his NZ$10 million ($8.19 million of government bonds. His wife, Mona, will also get her living expenses and medical bills paid (she recently gave birth, and she will have the use of her seized 2010 Toyota Vellfire, worth NZ$60,000 ($49,000.

Since early April, Dotcom has had the use of his mansion, including the use of his swimming pool for exercise. He is also able to use the Internet. He told Radio New Zealand (MP3 earlier this month that he was using his limited freedom to coordinate his legal defense—and record a «dance music» album as a way to raise money to pay his legal fees. Dotcom is also apparently required to take a photo of himself at the Auckland studio where he has been recording his album and send it to his bail officer to confirm his location.

The German-born entrepreneur has also been involved in a political row in New Zealand.

On Monday, the New Zealand Herald reported that Dotcom claims to have donated NZ$50,000 ($41,000 to John Banks, the head of the ACT New Zealand political party and the current minister for Small Business and Regulatory Reform, during his 2010 campaign for mayor of the city of Auckland.

Dotcom told the newspaper that Banks asked him to divide the payments into two installments of NZ$25,000 each so as to conceal their origin, and that the local politician called him personally to thank him. However, in a statement on his website, Banks denied calling Dotcom for the mayoral donations, adding: «I could not have, as any such contribution was anonymous.»

New Zealand Prime Minister John Key, with whom Banks' ACT New Zealand party is in political coalition, also stepped into the fray over the weekend, saying that he trusted Banks, and that the police should investigate any potential wrongdoing.

Isabel Mercedes Celis Missing: Police expand search for 6-year-old to Mexico

Isabel Mercedes Celis

This undated photo provided by the Tucson Police Dept. shows Isabel Mercedes Celis.

(CBS/AP TUCSON, Ariz. – A group of five people were captured on surveillance video leaving a club near the Celis family home around the time 6-year-old Isabel Celis disappeared.

Pictures: 6-year-old vanishes from Arizona home

ABC’s Good Morning America reports one of the men captured in that footage could be a key witness in the case of the missing Ariz. girl as police start searching Mexico.

Three woman and two men were captured on camera just a block from Isabel’s home. According to authorities, the group was walking away from the club at 1:30 a.m. in the direction of the house.

Tucson police say they’ve talked with at least three of five people captured on that video.

Lt. Fabian Pacheco says detectives wanted to talk with the group walking early in the morning to see if they saw anything unusual. Pacheco didn’t say at a press briefing Sunday afternoon what the men and women told officers.

Dozens of tips are still being investigated as police try to find out what happened to the missing first-grader.

Meanwhile, the search for Isabel has widened, crossing over into Mexico. Saturday, U.S. marshals asked Mexican police for help checking hotels, bus terminals, and businesses in the town of Sonora, where the 6-year-old’s photo is being circulated.

«The idea of having Mexico involved I think is a logical idea and a good idea at this point…»The idea that somebody crossed and picked up Isabel and then went back into Mexico is actually realistic,» said former FBI agent Brad Garrett.

Isabel Celis was last seen around 11 p.m. on April 20 when she was getting ready for bed. She was reported missing by her father around 8 a.m. the next morning after he went to wake her up. According to police, the child was not in her room and a bedroom window was opened with the screen removed.

Although ABC News reports police have not ruled out Celis’s parents as suspects, they have said the family has cooperated with police during the investigation.

Revised: Mercedes-Benz USA and Dealer Partners Commit $1.3M to Laureus Sport for Good Foundation USA to Fund Coaches …

CHICAGO, April 16, 2012 /PRNewswire/ – In the news release, Mercedes-Benz USA and Dealer Partners Commit $1.3M to Laureus Sport for Good Foundation USA to Fund Coaches in Five U.S. Cities, issued 10-Apr-2012 by Mercedes-Benz USA over PR Newswire, we are advised by the company that there have been updates to the text. The complete, corrected release follows:

Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA today announced that the company and its dealers will commit $1.3 million in 2012 to the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation USA, a charitable organization that supports projects in the U.S. to improve the lives of youth through the power of sports, to fund coaches in five U.S. cities: Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Miami and New Orleans.

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20100901/NY58315LOGO

The national initiative will focus on training and placing 250 coaches in sports-based youth development projects in underserved neighborhoods through Coach Across America, Laureus’ delivery partner. The coaches will provide mentorship to 40,000 youth across 125 local communities.

The national kickoff and new collaboration begins in Chicago this afternoon with Laureus World Sports Academy Members Dr. Edwin Moses, a two time Olympic gold medalist, and Marcus Allen, Hall of Fame running back for the Los Angeles Raiders and Kansas City Chiefs, visiting Beyond the Ball, an organization that teaches youth about personal and social responsibility through sports.

«Mercedes-Benz USA and our dealer partners have a long tradition of supporting and giving back to our communities. When you combine that with MBUSA’s extensive involvement in high-profile sports events, this is an undertaking that really makes sense for us and provides a real benefit to youth across the country,» said Steve Cannon, president and CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA.

The Chicago initiative will focus on training and placing approximately 40 coaches in nine sports-based youth development projects in underserved neighborhoods. The projects include: Beyond the Ball, America SCORES Chicago, MetroSquash, Girls in the Game, Urban Initiatives, After-School All-Stars Chicago, Chicago Youth Boxing Club, Triple Threat and Near West Side CDC.

The remaining cities will launch later this year.

«We believe in the transformational power of sport as a tool for social good. Today’s coaches go beyond the traditional sense of the term ‘coach,’» said Moses, who also serves as the chairman of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation USA. «They are mentors, community organizers and mediators. Investing in proper training and offering support for these coaches is vital to sports-based youth development, especially as youth violence and obesity escalate and school-based programs continue to be decimated by budget cuts. Initiatives like this are essential in America to fill the gap.»

In the last two years alone, $3.5 billion has been cut from school sports budgets, resulting in 16.5 million youth with little to no access to sports. [1] With staggering childhood obesity statistics – an estimated 33 percent of American youth are overweight or obese by third grade – and a dangerous spike in youth violence – over March 17-18 in Chicago in what is believed to be gang-related incidents, 10 people were fatally shot, including a 6-year-old girl, and 40 others were wounded – solutions to combat these issues affecting youth are sorely needed.

Access to sports programs can be part of the answer. A recent GAO report confirmed that coaches play an important role in youth sports and development, yet quality ones are in short supply.[2] By providing training for coaches and offering the infrastructure, best practices, expertise, delivery of programming and evaluation to support them as they are placed in community projects, Laureus Sport for Good Foundation USA is furthering its mission to use sport as the means to combat some of the toughest social challenges facing young people today.

Additionally, this initiative will provide employment opportunities and relevant experience in the sport for development sector for young adults in this tough economy. Many of the coaches recruited by Coach Across America will be college graduates from the local community.

«The positive influence coaches can have on today’s underserved youth is undeniable,» said James Kallusky, executive director of Coach Across America. «The generous support from both Mercedes-Benz USA and Laureus Sport for Good Foundation USA will allow Coach Across America to both broaden and deepen its impact by providing new coaches in these key cities.»

Daimler Q1 net rises 20 percent, Mercedes slips

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP — Automaker Daimler AG says net profit rose 20 percent to €1.42 billion ($1.88 billion in the first quarter despite a slip in earnings at its key Mercedes luxury car business.

Revenues rose 9 percent to €27.01 billion and the company sold 9 percent more vehicles worldwide, at 502,086.

Both the sales and net profit figures beat the average analyst estimate compiled by FactSet, which foresaw profit of €1.22 billion.

Divisional earnings slipped 3 percent at the Mercedes-Benz Car division, the company’s biggest. Daimler said Friday that spending on expanded production capability and upcoming new vehicles weighed on the results, as did what it called temporarily weaker pricing in the crucial Chinese market.

Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche, who also heads the Mercedes division, called it «a strong quarter.»

«Despite higher investment in future growth and a challenging market environment, we succeeded in surpassing the very good prior-year results,» he said in a statement.

The company reaffirmed its cautious outlook for the year, saying earnings before interest and taxes would match last year’s.

Earnings were helped by a stronger performance from the company’s financial services division, where earnings rose 7 percent, and from accounting for its ownership share in aerospace firm EADS. The financial category where the EADS stake is accounted for went from a loss of €131 million to a gain of €86 million.

Shoulder to shoulder: CA Immo and Patrizia develop city quarter in Munich

CA Immo and Patrizia Immobilien AG agreed on a joint venture to develop the Baumkirchen Mitte city quarter in Munich. The realisation of this project is scheduled to start as soon as the land-use planning process involving the City of Munich and CA Immo is complete. Demolition work on the site is already well underway.

Munich Patrizia Immobilien AG

This newly announced joint venture will handle broad sections of the planned construction activities in the Baumkirchen Mitte development project initiated by CA Immo. Together, CA Immo and Patrizia will lay out the quarter's intended residential building plots as well as develop land designated for high-end commercial use (e.g. offices. In total, this joint venture between CA Immo and Patrizia covers approximately 29,000 m² (312,153 sq. ft. of land, with planned gross floor space of around 45,500 m2 (489,757 sq. ft. for apartments and around 18,500 m² (199,132 sq. ft. for offices.

The land-use planning process now being carried out by the City of Munich covers the entire area surrounding former railway repair plant 4 in Munich's Berg am Laim district. This area has one boundary to the east, Baumkirchner Strasse, and one to the south, Neumarkter Strasse. Until this announcement, CA Immo was the major owner of this 131,100 m² (1,411,148 sq. ft. of land. One of the fascinating aspects of this particular development is that around 50 % of the overall site (62,000 m²/667,362 sq. ft. will not be built on, but will instead be kept and developed further as an ecological conservation area. Special paths will open up the area – which is currently inaccessible – to future residents, neighbours, and the general public. Overall, this future mixed-use quarter is scheduled to extend across 80,000 m² (861,112 sq. ft. of gross floor area. Of this, the majority (50,000 m²/538,195 sq. ft. will be used for around 490 planned apartments of various sizes for approximately 1,100 residents. There are also plans to construct a local amenity centre on Baumkirchner Strasse as well as two childcare facilities to serve the quarter. The sports club which currently enjoy the use of this land will be moving to a newly built sports hall on a neighbouring plot on Neumarkter Strasse.

The defining highlight of this quarter will be its generous and expansive green spaces. As well as the conservation area to the west, another 34,000 m² (365,972 sq. ft. on the built-up east side will be given over to public and private green spaces. Of this, around 3,000 m² (32,291 sq. ft. will take the form of roof gardens for use by all future occupants of the residential buildings.

The land-use planning process is based on an international urban planning and landscaping competition run jointly by the City of Munich and CA Immo in 2010. Draft concepts from urban planners Peter Ebner Friends (Vienna and landscape planners Mahl Gebhard Konzepte (Munich won the contest. As per the current timeline, the planning process should be completed by the end of this year. Initial construction work could begin immediately afterwards. In preparation for building on the land, all of the derelict and unsaveable buildings in the former repair plant are being demolished. This work is expected to finish in spring 2012.

Hard Facts on Software – Get the Most Out of Google

A few days ago I stumbled across an article talking about all the search options one tends to not know about with Google. So I have decided to take a break from the safe online shopping theme this week and rather share with you some tips and tricks to get the most out of Google. So herewith the story as it is found on Google Help pages. This is not even a small part of how you can search, so consider it an introduction.

«Search is simple: just type whatever comes to mind in the search box, hit Enter or click the Search button, and Google will search the web for content that’s relevant to your search. If you have Google Instant enabled, results may appear dynamically as you type.

Most of the time, you’ll find exactly what you’re looking for with just a basic query (the word or phrase you search for. However, the following tips can help you make the most of your searches. Throughout the article, we’ll use square brackets [ ] to signal a search query, so [ black and white ] is one query, while [ black ] and [ white ] are two separate queries.»

Voice Search is available on Google.com using Google Chrome as well, but let’s not focus on that now.

«Some basic facts

Every word matters. Generally, all the words you put in the query will be used.

Search is always case insensitive. A search for [ new york times ] is the same as a search for [ New York Times ].

Generally, punctuation is ignored, including @#$%^*(=+[] and other special characters. To make sure that your Google searches return the most relevant results, there are some exceptions to the rules above.

Tips for better searches

Keep it simple. If you’re looking for a particular company, just enter its name, or as much of its name as you can recall. If you’re looking for a particular concept, place, or product, start with its name. If you’re looking for a pizza restaurant, just enter pizza and the name of your town or your zip code. Most queries do not require advanced operators or unusual syntax. Simple is good.

Think how the page you are looking for will be written. A search engine is not a human, it is a program that matches the words you give to pages on the web. Use the words that are most likely to appear on the page. For example, instead of saying [ my head hurts ], say [ headache ], because that’s the term a medical page will use. The query [ in what country are bats considered an omen of good luck? ] is very clear to a person, but the document that gives the answer may not have those words. Instead, use the query [ bats are considered good luck in ] or even just [ bats good luck ], because that is probably what the right page will say.

Describe what you need with as few terms as possible. The goal of each word in a query is to focus it further. Since all words are used, each additional word limits the results. If you limit too much, you will miss a lot of useful information. The main advantage to starting with fewer keywords is that, if you don’t get what you need, the results will likely give you a good indication of what additional words are needed to refine your results on the next search. For example, [ weather cancun ] is a simple way to find the weather and it is likely to give better results than the longer [ weather report for cancun mexico ].

Choose descriptive words. The more unique the word is the more likely you are to get relevant results. Words that are not very descriptive, like ‘document,’ ‘website,’ ‘company,’ or ‘info,’ are usually not needed. Keep in mind, however, that even if the word has the correct meaning but it is not the one most people use, it may not match the pages you need. For example, [ celebrity ringtones ] is more descriptive and specific than [ celebrity sounds ].»

Until next time then – have a good long weekend – and keep it (Afresh.

This is contrasted by a supply of property that has seen building solely on an "as-required" basis over the past few years and is scarce in many segments. This potential is increasingly enticing international property companies into the German capital and Austria also has a strong presence there.

Since taking over the German urban district developer, Vivico, in 2008, CA Immo has had a presence in Berlin with total property assets with a market value of about 519 million Euros. Just under half of this (222 million Euros is accounted for by property assets under development. CA Immo currently has three development projects under construction in Berlin with a total investment volume of 194 million Euros. The Group also owns some 1. 4 m sq m of land reserves (with planning permission in the German capital, some of these reserves being large sites with the potential for residential construction.

Dr. Bruno Ettenauer, CEO of CA Immo comments: "We can currently leverage vast potential in Berlin and are benefiting from the present positive market situation. We are rapidly pushing forward development all around Berlin's main railway station (Hauptbahnhof in the government quarter with Europacity. One of the projects that we will be completing there by the end of this year is the new German headquarters of the oil group Total. We can exploit the large volume of excess demand across the board. This excess demand can be seen particularly in the residential and hotel sector, where we are participating with the lucrative sale of dedicated building plots and a few joint venture projects. We are implementing proprietary developments exclusively in the fields of commercial use, particularly in the office and hotel sector."

In 2011, 56% of sales revenues were accounted for by building plots within the framework of German urban district development, for which the relevant value-adding zoning permits had previously been acquired. Ettenauer: "We were able to sell these building plots at well above book value and also have the advantage of not losing any rental income in subsequent years as a result."

It is obvious that supply will increase rapidly along with demand – numerous developers have discovered the location for themselves. Ettenauer: "We are aware that we will not be the only project developers in Berlin over the next few years. I am expecting the limited availability of project funding to create "healthy regulation" in the project development sector here. " The prerequisites for financing commitments include a high pre-leasing ratio (at least 40% and a good credit rating, along with experience and a proven track record on the part of the investor. Ettenauer: "We can furnish all of these and will continue to be able to do so, so that we are well placed to provide a high-quality supply of property quickly here."

Urban district development describes a specific form of development project, in which extensive, derelict or former industrial properties are systematically transformed into modern, mixed-use urban districts. The existing land reserves acquire added value in this process through the acquisition of planning permission and are then turned to account by means of sales, proprietary development projects or joint venture developments. Once a project is completed, CA Immo either integrates it into its own asset portfolio or sells it on completion to an end investor. Ettenauer: "In the residential sector, in particular, we are increasingly looking to sell plots or enter into joint ventures at an early stage. This enables us to keep the time-to-market short in markets with a high residential demand – such as Berlin, for example – while simultaneously jump-starting the district as a whole." The latest examples are the joint venture between CA Immo and Hamburg Team in Berlin's Europacity, which plans for the construction of some 550 apartments at "Hamburger Stadthafen" (city harbour in Europacity, Berlin, and the joint venture with Reggeborgh Investment in Berlin's Flottwellstrasse (250 apartments.

More than 80% – 300 million Euros – of total investment volume in 2012 is being poured into ongoing construction projects in Germany. Frankfurt and Berlin, in particular, are the focus of investment activities. Ettenauer: "With the completion of the Skyline Plaza shopping centre, planned for 2013, we will have largely finalised the development of Frankfurt's Europaviertel district. We are currently at the stage, in the development of the Europacity in Berlin, at which we were in Frankfurt three years ago. Here – after acquiring the zoning permits – our aim is to rapidly and profitably utilise land reserves. "

The Berlin West and Mitte districts are merging – and CA Immo is directly involved in the process: the project site for the new Europacity urban district, with an area of about 40 hectares, is located in the immediate vicinity of the central railway station (Hauptbahnhof and will connect the districts of Westberlin and Berlin Mitte. The main owners of the project site areas are CA Immo Deutschland (about 20 ha, Deutsche Bahn AG (about 10 ha and the state of Berlin (about 6 ha. The development goal is the creation of a mixed-use district immediately adjacent to the Charité university hospital, the seat of government and the central railway station. CA Immo currently has two projects under construction at this site: the Tour Total office block and the InterCity Hotel Berlin Hauptbahnhof.

The German headquarters of the oil company Total is being erected in the immediate vicinity of Berlin's central railway station (Hauptbahnhof. With a gross area of 18,000 sq m, this is the first office block in the new Europacity district. CA Immo is the planner and owner; the building has been designed as a "green building". Planned completion is the second quarter of 2012. The total investment volume is about 70 million Euros.

CA Immo is putting up the "InterCity Hotel Berlin Hauptbahnhof" for the Steigenberger Group between Berlin's central railway station and the Chancellery. The eight-storey building has been designed as an upper mid-range hotel. With about 410 rooms, this will be the largest InterCity Hotel; the building will cover a gross area of 19,800 sq m and have room for about 70 parking spaces. The total investment volume is 53. 2 million Euros.

In addition to the construction projects in Europacity, CA Immo is also building the new German headquarters for Mercedes-Benz Vertrieb Deutschland (MBVD in the Berlin Friedrichshain district. The foundation stone for the "green building", certified by the DGNB (German Sustainable Building Council, was laid in November 2011 and the lease commences from mid-2012, initially for a ten-year period. With this project, MBVD is bundling all its previous Berlin locations in one newly erected property to be planned and built by CA Immo to MBVD's specifications. CA Immo has the role of both owner and investor in this project. The total investment volume is about 72 million Euros.

Bombardier Unveils New Signalling Solution for Cost Effective Regional Rail Traffic Management

BERLIN, GERMANY–(Marketwire -04/19/12- Rail technology leader Bombardier Transportation has delivered the world’s first application of a European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS regional solution on the Vasterdal line in Sweden. The groundbreaking BOMBARDIER INTERFLO 550 ERTMS regional system reduces operational costs and accommodates increased traffic capacity and automated train control around the clock.

Meeting the new rail control specification of the International Union of Railways (UIC for less intensively used routes, the system began operation earlier this spring. The newly equipped line is the pilot project under Bombardier’s frame agreement with the Swedish Transport Administration (STA, the country’s national rail operator.

INTERFLO 550 technology has effectively upgraded the line from manual to automatic control, creating a sustainable alternative for lines otherwise burdened with the cost of maintaining manual operation or upgrading to traditional remote-controlled signalling. The new system combines the ERTMS standard for onboard automatic train protection (ATP with a radio-based wayside system, thereby minimizing trackside equipment.

Bombardier together with the STA will showcase the new technology at the UIC ERTMS World Conference (ertms-conference2012.com to be held in Stockholm, Sweden from April 24 to 26. As well as a technical demonstration on a section of the Borlange to Malung line northwest of Stockholm, the event will include a series of seminars.

Peter Cedervall, President, Rail Control Solutions, Bombardier Transportation said: «This is a significant achievement for Bombardier as it is the first line globally to go into operation with ERTMS technology optimised for regional lines, which offers a number of benefits for applications worldwide. Bombardier continues to be a leader in ERTMS technology globally, from its balise technology chosen as the heart of the system, to the highest speed technology running in China and on some of the busiest lines in Europe. This latest innovation is a further important addition to our product and technology portfolio helping to maximize rail traffic flow.»

With a strong involvement in the development of ERTMS/ETCS technology, Bombardier’s solutions are operating or being delivered on more than 2,500 vehicles and 15,000 km of track in 16 countries. The INTERFLO 450 Level 2 solution has been running on the highest speed lines in China since 2009, recently received permission for commercial operation on the Amsterdam-Utrecht line in the Netherlands, one of the busiest mainlines in Europe, and was inaugurated on Sweden’s first high speed ERTMS Level 2 line, the Botnia line, in 2010. Bombardier ERTMS techonology is also installed in Croatia, Germany, Korea, Switzerland, Spain and Taiwan and first-in-market projects are being delivered in Algeria and Poland, as well as extensive framework agreements in Sweden and Norway.

Bombardier Transportation’s Rail Control Solutions portfolio covers the whole range of BOMBARDIER CITYFLO mass transit solutions, from manual to fully automatic, as well as communications-based systems. It also provides INTERFLO mainline solutions, from conventional to European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS Level 2 systems. Bombardier provides a complete palette of wayside and onboard signalling products.

Revised: Mercedes-Benz USA and Dealer Partners Commit $1.3M to Laureus Sport for Good Foundation USA to Fund Coaches …

CHICAGO, April 16, 2012 /PRNewswire/ – In the news release, and Dealer Partners Commit $1.3M to for Good Foundation USA to Fund Coaches in Five U.S. Cities, issued 10-Apr-2012 by over PR Newswire, we are advised by the company that there have been updates to the text.

» and our dealer partners have a long tradition of supporting and giving back to our communities. When you combine that with MBUSA’s extensive involvement in high-profile sports events, this is an undertaking that really makes sense for us and provides a real benefit to youth across the country,» said Steve Cannon, president and CEO of .

Today’s coaches go beyond the traditional sense of the term ‘coach,’» said Moses, who also serves as the chairman of the for Good Foundation USA.

A recent GAO report confirmed that coaches play an important role in youth sports and development, yet quality ones are in short supply.[2] By providing training for coaches and offering the infrastructure, best practices, expertise, delivery of programming and evaluation to support them as they are placed in community projects, for Good Foundation USA is furthering its mission to use sport as the means to combat some of the toughest social challenges facing young people today.

«The generous support from both and for Good Foundation USA will allow Coach Across America to both broaden and deepen its impact by providing new coaches in these key cities. «

New Survey Shows Lack of Smart Grid Awareness is Hampering Adoption, According …

/PRNewswire/ –

Utility companies have invested billions of dollars in new smart grid program rollouts, but so far, customer adoption has been slow. A new PwC US survey and report titled unveiled today found that most (58 percent customers have not even heard of smart grid technology and those who have feel that they have very limited knowledge of the opportunities that the smart grid offers.

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire. com/prnh/20100917/NY66894LOGO

The report, which summarizes key findings from a survey of 900 utility customers in the Midwest as well as follow up focus groups, explores how customers use energy, how smart grid technology will affect their everyday lives and how much they expect to embrace products and services related to the smart grid in the next few years.

The survey also reveals key distinctions in attitudes and behavior among younger and older customers and found that customers want more control of their energy use, including the option to generate their own power, and they are willing to partner with their utility to make this happen.

The report details PwC’s recommended strategies to successfully promote customer adoption of smart grid solutions:

  • . Customers are not mandated to use smart grid products, and therefore the success of a utility company’s smart grid program depends on the customers’ willingness to participate. To help generate that interest, utilities must become more effective marketers.
  • . Utilities must emphasize and clearly communicate to customers how smart grid technology can allow them to take greater control of their energy usage and provide new opportunities for the customer and the utility to develop a partnership for their mutual benefit.
  • . Relevant and timely communication that is tailored to customers’ unique needs and interest is a key success factor. By implementing a multi-channel strategy, utilities can further extend the effectiveness of their customer outreach.

Members of PwC’s power and utilities industry practice are available to discuss the report findings and share further insight regarding the implications for companies in the industry.

PwC unveiled this new report at CS Week, a utility industry customer service event taking place this week in Grapevine, Texas.

‘Smart keys’ may pose deadly danger

(WPRI – Keyless ignition is supposed to be a convenient feature on many new cars. However, several people have died, and one person was left with debilitating injuries from carbon monoxide poisoning. The families of the victims are pointing their fingers at a «keyless ignition» design.

These «smart keys» are remote control keys that lock, unlock and start a car’s engine. It’s supposed to be the latest and greatest technology for drivers, so they don’t have to use a traditional key. You don’t even need a key to shut off your car, and that’s the problem. Some drivers have been unknowingly leaving their cars running, sometimes with deadly results.

It happened in a garage in West Boca, Florida, in a garage in Queens County, New York, and in another in Boca Raton. Carbon monoxide poisoning claimed the lives of four people. And according to court and police documents obtained by Eyewitness News, all of the victims had keyless ignitions and may have unknowingly left their cars running for hours.

«The ‘smart key’ is supposed to provide convenience to owners,» says product safety expert Sean Kane. «They no longer, in many cases, need to unlock the car. They don’t actually have to use a key in a traditional ignition cylinder to turn the car on.»

With a traditional key you have to shut the car off before you can take the key out. The families of several of the victims have filed lawsuits against the car manufacturer saying that this new keyless system contributed to their deaths.

«There’s no question that the onus is on the drivers to shut the car off,» says Kane. «But what is happening here is if you completely change the traditional relationship between the driver and the car, people make mistakes.»

We contacted the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. We’re told the agency is proposing to require warning sounds if a driver gets out of a car that’s still running. While some cars already have these in place, NHTSA says not all drivers hear them. They are also considering requiring manufacturers to install automatic shut-off devices.
